First color coat is ON!!! woot!!

Shot the first coat of color about a half hour ago...

Used mineral spirits after reading the links...

Mineral spirits is the ONLY thing you should use to thin this stuff... It layed down with almost NO orange peel. It should settle out very nicely!

The photos show after one light first coat. I will then be applying two additional coats getting heavier and wetter with each one. Will wet sand with 600 between first two coats, then wet sand with 1500 and buff the final coat.

Before I shot the first color coat I wet sanded all the primer with 400. Took about 3.5 hours from begin sand to finish of first coat.

Now the pics...

A couple more...

Came out pretty good. Did get a little water spurt towards the end which I will have to deal with tomorrow. Going to run both compressors with a better water trap tomorrow.

Just got my paint

I brought a hinge in from the Fj40 and had them match it up the paint. It is an amazing match and I am going to start paiting two hard top doors. I will post them up when I am done. The truck is coded "Lilly white."

Second color coat is on...

Some shots of teh second coat.

Sanded with 1000 grit between first and second. Second was layed on thicker and wetter. Still not one run. I love this paint!

Wow, super nice job. If mine turns out 1/4 good as yours, then I'll be a happy camper. I put 2 coats on the parts I sprayed and wet sanded with 800. Waiting for the wind to die down to do 2 more coats. Does your paint have a satin finish when it dries?

Thanks!

Paint has a gloss finish when dry. Make sure to get the gloss base when you go to ACE. The pictures are after about 3 hours dry time. Dries to touch in 6-7 hours ready to re-sand in 24. The paint looks just as glossy this morning as last night.

Thats the only thing I dont like about this paint compared to a laquer paint is the dry time.

I also have been able to keep the dust way down and as a result, a very smooth surface even without wet sanding is achieved. I will be shooting my third and final coat tonight, and if I'm lucky, I will not be wet sanding, only buffing. We will see...

I painted my 60 with Gillespe Coating flat tan. It's military paint and I rolled it right on, no thiner, nothing. It looks good from 10'. I get lots of compliments on it and it only cost about $90 including supplies. I will post some pic's. later.....Joe

Well,

Decided to fix a couple waves in the upper fenders, and fix a slight flaw on the pass rear upper fender. Previous owner had a radio antenea there and we plugged it with metal and glass, but after paint, I could still see a slight circle, so I'm doing these areas over again... Crap!

So I'm holding for 3rd coat, and I'm also realizing that 600 is all you need for nib sanding. 1000 and 1500+ is only good for final. (or if you want to sand your ass off and get very little removed)...

I'll have some body work photos up soon. *breaks out torch* damn waves...:D

I'm taking a break right now from tearing apart the cruiser for paint prep. Never realized how many little bolts etc there are. It actually very relaxing. I'll snap some pics.

TheCrazyGreek's pics has certainly motivated me to do this faster!!!!! Looks great!

OK, waves are all fixed...

I layed down another coat of primer on the repaired areas. And have shot 3 color coats on those spots. Will be going for a final 4th and fifth coat Sunday.

BIG NEWS!!!
I found a compatible clearcoat system that can be sprayed over ACE paint. It dries to a ROCK HARD finish in three days.
I sprayed 3 coats on a test patch 3 nights ago. 20 minutes between coats. It has NO ILL EFFECTS over the ACE paint. came out freakin nice!

It's a VALSPAR product. You want to ask for the LIC-30 binder only. WITH hardner. Man o man...

Batts dies in Camera but I will have a couple pics here soon... I am soo jazzed about this. And for those who think a 40 should not be clearcoated, I understand why, but the ACE paint is a very soft product compared to automotive grade paint. This clear, solves the hardness issue. And besides, every car made today uses clear, why not mine...

Really nice.....

I just sprayed my fj-40 with rustoleum primer. You can see the thread with pictures I posted today. I am painting using ACE paint mixed to sky blue. I'm going to spray tomorrow and will post pics. Old dude at the store whipped up the magic brew based on a chunk I brought him.

I used to work at ACE in college and we sold a good bit of the rust stop for farm use, etc. But we also had a few circle track guys buy it to paint thier cars. I dont knwo how it will hold up, but it does look nice.

Before and after fender repair

Got the fenders flattened out..

Also shot the doors. The test patch of clearcoat I shot was soooo hard. I needed to sand it off to re-do the area, and it took forever to sand off. GOOD STUFF...

Anyhoo, final coat will be shot Sat am. Clear on Sun pm. WOOT!

First pic shows the slight dip in fender, then abracadabra, poof it''s gone.. Straight as can be... plus some dust...

Looks great. Snowed 10" here and I'm all set to wet-sand all afternoon but my kid is home sick....and another week goes by. Your paint job is very inspiring!

Ok, after reading about 10 different threads and seeing everyones successes.... I picked up a quart of Rustoleum Almond to test out... couldn't find any mineral spirits that wasn't "Low odor" so I resorted to the directions on the can that say to thin with acetone... so I picked up a can of that(acetone) too. Gonna take the hood of my 4runner(needs to be painted too) to play with before I go at the FJ60. Got a compressor and a sprayer... This should be interesting! I'd start tonight but it just rained and it's HUMID as @#$! in the garage. I'll post up some pics when I get done... I hope this turns out half as good as everyone elses!

Whole rig is in color...

Got some time in today.

Shot the interior and exterior one last final time before clearcoat. Looks good.

I have been experimenting with paint over bedliner for several weeks now. Using the duplicolor bedliner material, I was able to paint it with ACE. It adheres VERY well, and after 3 coats of clear, was VERY HARD to scuff etc.

Before painting I applied (cleaned) liner area with a heavy dose of Mineral Spirits. This gives the liner a very nice "bite" to accept the paint. I can't believe these two items are compatible, but after three weeks of beating on a test piece, I'm convinced! :D

Heres some pics...
