One thing to note too, if you don't have a solid CB setup, you should definitely get one. Having CB was very helpful. Not many folks running HAM last year, but I should have my HAM setup for this year in case anyone else does
What about the move from CB to FRS/GMRS radios? The midland handheld radios have a farther reach and are clearer than a CB, and are probably cheaper than a cheap CB/antenna setup.
Any CB recommendations? With links, Amazon preferred? :)
I used the HIH midland discount code last year and picked up a 40w GMRS for the 100, 15w units for both the polaris ranger and john deere tractor at the family farm and a couple of handhelds to pass to people to use. Maybe, they'll get the 25% midland discount again.

I run a Midland 75-822 that works really well. It's headless, which means you don't have to hard mount a big unit and power pulls of the cigarette lighter. So the only wiring you need to do is for the antenna. Depending on where you mount it, I'd get a 3' or 4' firestik

I am no radio pro, I just know that most of the trail leaders were using CB to talk with us and I use CB with my local group when we go out. It works well for car to car, but otherwise it's not particularly useful. I think HAM is still the way to go if you need reach and clarity.... I think @LongDuck would be able to give better info than myself

Hey Kyle! You were great neighbors too. As long as something doesn't go horribly wrong and I get signed up I'll be back with my entire family this year. That will be a completely different experience ;)

And I'd love to send my wife out to do some driving as well, that's a great idea.

Nate (@westwardCruiser )- right on man! Its good to 'hear' from you - hope we can reconnect at HIH!

This set up worked great for me last year:

I’m gonna admit I’m a bit intimidated. While I’ve been on this forum for about a year, I don’t know anyone going in real life. I feel like I’m showing up to a party where everyone knows everyone. I’m a novice with my 100. I know any cruiser owner I meet in public is super cool but it’s just a big commitment to drive 800 miles and take a week vacation with strangers. Anyone in the same boat, or better yet, was last year and can speak to that?

This was exactly me last year going into HIH8. I'm not that active on the forum even though I've been a member for many years. I didn't know anyone going to HIH8, I'm a pretty quiet guy that mostly keeps to myself, its a 1450 mile drive one-way from here in Indiana to Silverton, and I would be going solo. I had heard many good things about it but wasn't really sure what to expect. 110% no regrets! Had an absolute blast! Like I said, I'm a quiet guy, but everyone there was super friendly and very welcoming. The event was very well organized with lots of different activities in the evenings after the trail runs. And the trail runs themselves......Absolutely awesome! Great Trail Leaders and there is something for drivers of all skill levels to enjoy. My personal favorites were the Alpine Loop and Imogene. Alpine Loop because it was a nice, fairly easy, full day of trails that went to some spectacular spots and Imogene because it had some more technical areas and many stunning views from 13,000ft +. If you have never been to the area, it is breathtaking. My opinion, give it a shot. Even at the very least, its still a weeks vacation in Colorado, and IMO, its hard to beat that!

For HIH8, I bought and installed this Uniden. It's very similar to the cobra that has been mentioned above, as all the functions are controlled through the handheld mic. I bought it over the cobra mostly just because I like the looks of it better and thought the mic had a better feel in my hand. I also wanted something with NOAA weather bands and the Uniden 760 model has those too (as does the cobra). It does have a little small "brain box" that you have to put somewhere. Turns out it fits exactly perfect in the bottom of the center console, right next to the cd changer. I removed the cig lighter outlet inside the console and used that power to power the cb, and the hole where the cig lighter used to be to run my antenna wire down through the console to get under the carpet to run to the back, and also to run the wire for the mic down through the console and then out over by the front of the passenger seat. The mic is the only thing you ever see, and with the way I ran the wire for it, I just leave it between the console and passenger seat when not in use and you pretty much can't see it at all.

@Higgin - how many bananas?

How much better is this solution over the handhelds?

Eh, It was more time consuming really than hard. I'd say 2 bananas. And most of that time was spent running the antenna wire under the carpet to one of the rear rubber floor grommets to get it outside the truck to go to the antenna mounted at my rear hatch and figuring out how to remove the center console to run the wires down through it. I pulled the whole console out to run the wires and have easier access to the cig lighter power wires, but it might be possible to run the wires without taking the whole console out, I can't remember for sure, honestly. You could also use something like this Amazon.com: Carviya Car Motorbike/Motorcycle 12V Cigarette Lighter Power Supply Adapter Plug Cable with Switch Button Built-in 10A Fuse (1.5 Meters) 4.9FT: Electronics
if you don't want to remove the cig lighter plug. There are various ways of doing it for sure, but I just wanted a clean looking install on mine that wasn't going to give me an issues on down the road. I wish I had documented it better, but it was coming down to the wire on getting it done before HIH8, so I didn't mess with pictures. If you are only going to be using it for HIH8 and thats it, a handheld may be a better option honestly. You wouldn't have to mess with installing a bunch of stuff to use it 1x a year, the handhelds are probably cheaper once you add up the price of the cb, antenna, antenna wiring and antenna mount that I spent money on to do mine. Plus with a handheld you don't have to have it in the truck all the time. You probably give up some range with a handheld, I'm sure, but all of the groups I was with last year stayed pretty close together most of the time, so I don't think that would be a big deal. But like I said above, I like having the weather bands on mine, I use it a lot for that and I also go on lots of road trips in the LX and its nice having it there when I want it.

Theoretically speaking, what would be the smartest way to get a Cruiser to CO from FL without driving it? The auto train from Amtrak only runs from VA to FL. Put it on a truck?

Edit - Just realized I was thread jacking on cb questions. Will move that topic to another thread. Sorry!

@paflytyer I have a question about the registration time and the actual dates of the event.

Your post says the following:
Registration Opens: March 10th at 6PM (Mountain Standard Time)

This seems simple, but I believe that CO officially moves to MDT at 2:00AM on Sunday, March 10th (second Sunday in March). I would just use the timer on the page, but at least in my browser it seems to be off by maybe 6 hours. Maybe you really mean MST, since most of Arizona does not change. I would just like to clarify.

Also, on the dates, I know that registration is July 24th according to the post, but I received an automated email when I signed up for updates that stated registration began Thursday, July 24th. The problem is July 24th is a Wednesday, so I would like to confirm that the date was correct and just the day of the week was wrong in the email.

As you can tell, I am trying to make sure that I am there to register when it opens.

We just noticed our timer was weird. Didn’t realize the time change was happening. Official start time will be 6pm MT regardless of shifts in time, to keep it simple. The event starts 7/24. The Wednesday. No trails that day, just showing up and getting registered and getting your spot at HIH HQ. Trails begin Thursday. Please!! Show up Wednesday with everyone else. It plays havoc on us when people show up on Thursday and we are getting trails up and running.

Hope that helps!! Thx

I'll be there for several days before that scouting various passes and new trails. Looking forward to this more than anything in 2019!

Are you bringing the pup this year!?

Yup! Sydney will be present. Hopefully doesn't go on his Australian "walk-about" in Silverton this year. He got to know the town well at HIH8 :)
