I fear this post will just get lost in the thread, but it's an important one.

A WORKING CB IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN TRAIL RUNS AT 100s IN THE HILLS.

I know..... I made it all capitalized and shouty. Every year we have folks show up without a CB, or one that doesn't work, or one that is still in the packaging. You need a CB in order to participate and trail leaders will be checking to make sure they're working. Not a 2-way radio, not a ham, not a walkie-talkie, but an actual good ol' American-trucker CB radio. They're inexpensive and easy to install.

I use a CB twice a year. Once for Cruise Moab and once for HIH. It's not mounted in my truck and when it's not in use, it sits in my garage. I bought a Uniden 510XL and a Wilson Little Wil mag mount antenna brand new off Craigslist for $75 years ago. It works perfect. I mount the antenna on the roof and just route the antenna wire into the cab through the door or the back hatch. When I get home, it takes me 30 seconds to take everything out of the truck and put it back on the shelf in the garage. A handheld unit with a stubby antenna is probably not good enough. Buy a magnetic antenna.

There is a lot of information disseminated throughout the day by the trail leaders and trail participants. Communication is a big part of what we do. If you're annoyed by the chatter, turn the volume down, but you'll undoubtedly miss something . One of the reasons that we're so strict when it comes to trail leaders is that we expect them to have knowledge of the area, the trail, the vehicles and be comfortable communicating with others. I learn something new every time I'm on the trail.

Ham radio is great and I prefer it over CB all day, but it requires a more expensive setup and a license in order to talk. I got my ham radio license years ago and it's far and away the best way to communicate over long distance. Every trail will have an assigned CB radio channel and an assigned ham radio frequency. CB is the communication method, but the trail leader will most likely have ham if need be. Ham is not a substitute for CB at HIH. You need a working CB.

Can someone recommend a good CB radio setup?

Based on my reading here and elsewhere I just bought:

Uniden Pro520XL
RoadPro RPPS-220 (12v lighter power)
Hustler IC100W antenna

The plan is to temporary mount the cb for easy removing and use the cigarette lighter to power it. I will test this before HIH to confirm its performance.

I have heard ideally cigarette lighter isn’t the best way to power it, but also read a lot of success stories.

If you want a super easy setup that you can add/remove in seconds.

Midland 75-822 40 Channel CB-Way Radio
WILSON 305-38 300-Watt Little Wil Magnet Mount Antenna

This is what I have. The Midland is a little more expensive than some options, but I don't have to worry about where to mount it.

The most important part of the CB radio seems to be the ability to expand to an external antenna. The Little Wil antenna it very convenient and works very well. You will also need to tune the antenna. It takes about 3 minutes with the Little Wil. Someone at base camp will always have one available to borrow or you can just buy one for about $20 and know you will always be able to tune your antenna.

No schedule yet, but Friday/Sat were the best days last year. A lot of people left on Sunday last year and frankly by Sunday afternoon probably 60% of the camp was cleared out. Monday was just a clean up and exit day last year, IIRC.
I'm wondering about this too, last year ran Thursday - Tuesday and the last official runs were on Monday. Given this year is Wednesday-Monday does that mean the last runs are on Sunday? Trying to plan my departure back to the crappy east cost...

Rightchannelradios.com is a good place to get your CB stuff. They have good videos on installation and tuning as well.

Yes, Sunday is the new Monday in 2019. Event starting one day early, ending one day early in comparison to 2018.
Good observation. Thanks

Don't be afraid to offer up some clean up duty time on the Monday, though. That would be awesome. Especially the ladies bathrooms, I hear those can be a real stinker.

@benc with the 10% discount for HIH!

My Dissent skids and bumper get here tomorrow! Working with Ben has been great.
