1998, 250,000 miles, tranny is fine. One issue since Day One: A solid "clunk" when going from a lower range to OD.

As in dropping a gear going uphill. When hitting the crest and the load drops, he bangs back into OD...
Mine does the same thing and its a 98. I have been worried about it but havent felt it in quite some time. It kinda shutters sometimes before it slams into OD too. Wonder if its the driveshaft when its low on grease?

'98 FZJ105 with A442F 4spd auto currently just over 200,000km. No mechanical issues, I just change the oil and filter as required.

It does have a stage 2 valvebody (190,000km) and is subject to daily abuse from a boosted 1FZ :)

2000 LX with 212,000 miles now, with no problems at all. Transmission replaced at 90,000 by previous owner at Lexus dealer under warranty, due to failed transmission pump. All scheduled maintenance was done before pump failure.

1999 Toyota Land Cruiser with 191000 miles. With no transmission fluid change. It is a champ. With original transmission.

He's done this since new, plus I have had the shaft lube'd (but not too much!) occasionally w/o discernible difference.
Very much feels like it comes from the bowels of the truck...

1999, 193k and original tranny.

I have a question to the crowd. Has anybody out there put in the 5 spd instead of a refurbed 4 speed? If so what is required and have you was it worth it?

250K original transmissions but I did change the transmission filter and fluid (OEM) because it seems like the transmission took a little while to shift but that was because I had ECT mode on.

I've been curious if anyone has ever swapped it for a manual trans... tried searching awhile back with no results.

260K original transmission working as intended. It did have a babied life until 230k!

The 98 / 99 transmissions seem to be really strong. The problems, which are still relatively rare, start in 2000. For 2000 the transmission got a new part number and a different rebuild kit. The A343F rebuild kits today are for 1995 to 1999, then a different kit for 2000 to 2002. They had to make some fairly significant changes internally to warrant a different rebuild kit. Of course 2000 was a big year in the modernization of the vehicle with VSC, A-Trac, etc. I'm sure they thought they were improving the transmission too but sometimes these things don't work according to plan.

Just turned over 196k and shifts fine. No lag.. currently working on refreshing the front axles to fix some PO work, mainly R-N-D clunk, but outside of that no issues.
