1999 landcruiser

my truck has 180000 miles on it not even a hipcup on that thing,i have plug and drained it about 10 times since new, toyota atf and taking soon a 6000 miles trip to the west coast:clap:

2000 LX470 158K original tranny so far no problems I just bought this 3 weeks ago. It will get the amsoil tranny fluid in it very soon. I will also change the filter in it too.

Ain't got no filter just a wire mesh thinge. Just take it to Toyota and have them do a transmission service. When they are doing the service ask how the fluid looks. If it looks OK then you are good to go, if it is burnt you are already screwed. If you flush it with RP you might kill it on your own.

Lets see how common the transmission failure issue is for 98 - 2000 models. I have seen enough scattered posts about it to think that it warrants a thread of its own.

- What is the model year?
2001 LX470 A343F
1. Has your transmission failed?
Yes.
2. If so, after how many miles on it?
165,100
3. Before the failure, was it serviced as recommended?
No.
A sound was heard while overdrive was on. A rhythmic clink. Between 22-32mph. Very light accel. Upon turning off overdrive, the sound went away. I brought my LX to the Lexus/Toyota dealership in Anchorage and asked for a replacement and flush. I also asked for pictures with the trans pan removed.

Transmission is being replaced with a Toyota reman aka Awtec. This model LX is a late 2001, not the earlier version. I believe there is damage within the overdrive planetary gear which will lead to catastrophic failure.

2001 LX with 09/00 build date. Overdrive started making a grinding noise at low speed...then at all speed, the sudden catastrophic failure of planetary gear set... ~150K Have ~30K on mom and pop rebuild...perfect thus far...

2000 LX470 with 186000 miles. Original transmission seems flawless.

Wow, what major repairs have you done over the years at 414k? And where have you been driving that thing?! That is great to see such high miles!
Well I'm a DJ so i travel a lot doing shows. I have traveled to a lot of amusement parks and texas state park camping grounds with my two boys. Mostly highway miles and crawling over curbs when necessary. As far as major changes. Ive always used Royal purple full synthetic oil. At 380950 while cruising at 80 on the Houston toll road my radiator hose went. Steam every where as i pulled of the toll to a service station. Had AAA tow it to my mechanic who said it ruined the engine. Which sucks because i was trying to see how many miles i could get and all it took was a busted hose, so check your radiator hose people as a maintenance item. At least that hose lasted over 300000 miles. Starter was replaced under warranty at 68000. Fuel pump at 350000. Changed the power steering rack at 398000. I had one cv axel changed at 400 thousand and i just had the other cv axle changed 414000, and i just blew out the front diff, and had that replaced just yesterday. Thanks to https://forum.ih8mud.com/members/arcteryx.4381/ for the differential. I am amazed that the drivetrain lasted over 400000 miles. Every one who rides in it cannot believe it is a 1999 with over 400000 miles on it. They comment on the smooth solid ride, and i agree. Going for another 400000, next trip north to Sandusky ohio, cedar point theme park.

1999 LC with 260,000+ on the clock. Original motor and transmission. No issues.
:steer:

1999 LC 196,000 all original.

196,000 no problems on original tranny but i drive it as easy as you can.

I'm sure all years of LC are great, but it seems like 1999 is a magical year for durability!

2000 LX with 288K miles with original tranny and no issues at all. Never change fluid either.

I here it all the time that my 99 LC is one of the most desirable among those looking for used LC/LX. My mechanic said it is because of its reliability.

1998, 250,000 miles, tranny is fine. One issue since Day One: A solid "clunk" when going from a lower range to OD.

As in dropping a gear going uphill. When hitting the crest and the load drops, he bangs back into OD...

1998 with original tranny that has 215k on the clock. Still ticking like a fine Rolex. No leaks slips or clunks. Just drain and refill the transmission every 3rd oil change.

1998 LC 243,000 all original.
