'93 80 vs. '97 LX (1 Viewer)

Negative on the noise, haven't noticed a significant difference except that the transmission on the '97 likes to whistle, and the tires on the '93, being MTs, are louder than the 285 ATs on the LX.

Console area on the '93 does get hot, much more so than on the '97. Probably because the bigger transmission does not leave much room to the body. This reminds me that the harness protection down there has become very brittle on the '93.

Possibley the side-by-side cats VS inline as well.

From a photography perspective, I'm officially against 'Tammy-Whacking' :)

TireCarrier_1 (1).jpg
In the back of the '93, there now lives a Tools R Us tire carrier and a Puma 12V air compressor.

I'm liking that that spare tire holder & compressor...
How stable is it?
I can't find it a Tools R Us website.

Sorry, didn't see this... it's stable, nothing moves that shouldn't, and he doesn't make them these days.

New Year's Day was one of the rare opportunities to see snow in the desert - we took the '97 out together with with a few good friends... the crop of pix includes a few that are actually worthy to print :)

The weird aspect in all of this is that I started building the '93, and all the cool stuff happens in the LX...

I probably should do something about sliders for the '93.

So. I've always maintained that "...if it doesn't leave a puddle on the ground, it's not a leak".
But what if it leaves a puddle in the truck? :)

Good point! :) Somewhere, I do have a new gasket for the oil pump cover...

Unrelated to that, I'm still chasing electrons. Battery (Optima Red, ~7.5 years...) every now and then drops below 12V.
HAM radio draws 2mA, dome light circuit draws 8mA; not sure that's sufficient to explain things. And I have 0.69V on the cig lighter fuse (against body ground, but can't measure any current), no idea how that works.

Drops from sitting? All batteries discharge when sitting-even when not connected. Used to be general 1%/day. Parasitic drain ecm/clock etc. Below 12v is basically dead.

Yes, but I'm driving this thing every day. I haven't recognized enough of a pattern to predict (sort of...) when it won't want to start - hence the search for a drain...
I put the battery on the trickle charger every now and then, and the thing keeps hanging on...

'97 LX - strange sound from left front when coasting slowly; verdict: loose wheel bearing.

After putzing around for a while, which led to a new cone washer removal tool, diagnosis confirmed: wheel bearing locknuts were only finger-tight, if that. No signs of anything untoward on bearing or race, so re-greased bearing and re-assembled. That's when I noticed that the brake caliper bolts had different length (should have noted that something was up when I needed a 19mm socket...). Well, turns out a stock Toyota replacement from the boonie box wouldn't find purchase in the threads - I suppose that's why someone put a longer bolt in at the upper position. That one did in fact torque correctly, and doesn't interfere with the rotor. Bottom has now a stock Toyota bolt at the correct torque. Don't have time today to disassemble the knuckle and inspect, but I'm not liking that prospect...

And here's my new cone washer removal tool - sometimes it's good to have leftover Chevy half-ton stuff laying around: that nut is for a 9/16" u-bolt, and seems to fit perfectly around the cone washer, and it's longer than the stud:

It's been a while, finally did something about the tired red Optima in the '93 - there's now a 27F from Batteries Plus:

Still need to move the ground for the 2m radio to the battery, but I'm out of ring terminals of the right size.

.... and I suppose I ought to do something about this:

I think this is better. Good thing we, ahem, 'stock' supplies :) .... thanks, Kurt/Cruiseroutfitters

Lost 3 pounds in the process - no A/C in the garage.

And I probably should clean the rim to avoid surprises at the next tire rotation...
