Hmmmm? well I drove 30 km's with the catch can and I only got one drop of oil. But I don't want a gummed up intake either. Oh the choices! So you say to just dump the vent straight to the road like a 3b? I can do that, easy peasy. Now I just have to weld that port closed. Well thats not too bad, rather just a minor hickup.

So I took her out on the freeway today. The turbo has added 10 psi of boost. mostly medium and top end power. I personally dont care that I dont get much bottom end power since the truck came with 4:1 transfer case gears. My speedo is not calibrated but i was keeping up to traffic in a 120 km zone. So thats more that enough power for this turtle. I mostly just collect firewood, seaweed and leaves for the garden with this truck. I am very happy now that its not puffing black everywhere I go.

And yes, I am still awaiting my pyrometer.

Mine might have a little more blow-by than the average. When I had the head off at one point I could tell coolant had sat in the cylinders (likely when the original head cracked back in Japan). There was staining and a bit of pitting in the rear three cylinders. Compression test showed they were down about 20psi from spec and it came up with some added oil. Was thinking of rebuilding the bottom, but the truck drives great and nothing has got worse...so I figure why bother. :meh:

Sounds like yours is in great shape with very little blow-by. That means you really won't be polluting much by going with a stink pipe. :hillbilly: Sounds like it runs awesome on the highway too. Nice work!

First picture is at idle with the engine warmed up. 40 psi. not bad
second picture was at about 2000 rpm. I have no tach so its just a guess
3rd picture. I had to re-tap the bsp threads in the block to fit my new 1/8 pipe threads. Added a "T" for my oil guage
4th pic. nothing special just my plumbing.

The oil gauge is just a mock up to see what kind of readings this engine had. I will get a triple cluster for my gauges when the pyro arrives.

I scored a bunch of clear mahogany and I didn't really like the crome cluster so I just made up my own. I tried to give it that maritime look since most boats are finished with clear mahogany.

I have a boost gauge and pyrometer to match. Those will be next.

Here comes the boost!

sorry photo sucks

Well still no pyro but I disconnected the waste gate and now I have my boost hitting the 13 psi mark. I know, I know... Oh so dangerous without a pyro, but I watch my water temperature when going up hill and pulling big loads. So far so good. I think I will try turning up that fuel by a whole turn and see what that does.

Vroom vroom!

The throttle setup on a 2L is a bit different than a 3B. Once I turned up the fuel it also turned up the idle. So I had to adjust that. The boost now tops out at 15 psi. Which I am really happy about. The fuel adjust added way more bottom end power as well as a longer power band. I actually only turned my fuel screw in 1/4 of a turn.

Man this truck is fun to drive. Its just sipping the diesel.

Haha good result. Makes me want to crack on with turboing my thing.

Is 15 psi with waste gate disconnected still? If so, boost is limited by available fuel

More fuel might add even more bottom end, but you really need to have the pyro to check egts and have waste gate active to control boost.

Can't remember, does your IP have a boost compensator?

yes it does have a boost compensator. I do watch my water temperature because. When egt's go up, so does the water. I am super stoked on the power it has so no need to adjust any further as the 2LT will chirp my 33" tires.

I really have to post a video.

Yes the waste gate is disconnected.

Here's a link to a cold start on a warm day. lol

I put the side dump on the exhaust because I just couldn't hear my dam turbo. Now it sounds good from inside the cab. I had to move the exhaust anyways to mount a hidden hitch mount. That will be tomorrow ladies. buenos nachos!

My waste gate is disconnected but it seems to not want to rev past 15 psi. I am sure if I turned up the fuel more it would go to higher revs and psi. I am stoked on this setup.

I went for a hwy drive today to see what the new tune up would do. As soon as got onto the hwy my truck slowly lost boost and eventually died on the side of the road. After checking the air filter and turbo to see if it was jammed up or ???? who knows what? No oil dripping, nothing. CHecked to see if it had a vacuum lock, Still nothing. So I fired her up with hesitation, she slowly came to life coughing and puking black into our beautiful atmosphere. lol. I didn't want to call a town truck so I thought i would try to limp it home. Waited for a gap in the traffic and merged in. I slowly came up to speed and theres the boost again and she's alive.

So the conclusion is: I must have had water in the line or tank. I am just happy I didn't have to drop 75 bucks for a ride home.

Talk about opening a can of rust worms. Swiss cheese is the game. I have been doing lots of heavy hauling with lil truck and I cant believe it hasn't snapped in half yet. lol I even moved my tiny home around with it. WOW!

I accomplished the worst of the rust side today and maybe I will do the other tomorrow? I nearly just cut the whole frame off like I did my cruiser but I will do that in another 5-10 years. So I just scabbed it all together for now.
