Dont judge me on my rad hose with 20 hose clamps holding it together. That will change too! All with time my friends.

I had a friend over telling me what to do about my boost compensater. Its hard to tell with the first picture because of the shadows. There are two breathers. one which i disconnected and made into a breather. This is how my other stock 2l is setup.

The apple cider vinager bottle was a temp catch canto see if my valve cover vent was going to be puking out oil like I have read in other 2L turbo setups. I went for a 20 km drive trying to boost as much as i could and not one single drop of oil came out. SWEET! I was a little bit worried about this. Now I will vent the valve cover to pre-turbo. (not done yet)

3rd and final picture would be where the valve cover used to vent to the intake. I run a "T" off of this port for my boost and boost compensator line which goes to the top of my IP in picture 1.

Do I have all this stuff setup right? I have done my research but I'm not 100% on everything.

Well i guess people are just not that interested in the toyota pickups on this site. But I'll just keep blabering on... So after a few test runs I have been noticing a little extra smoke and the smell of oil. I believe that this old free turbo is going to need a rebuild. I would think the bearings might be a little worn out. Not enough to stop driving, but enough for a good laugh at intersections. When you stop at a long red light, theres a nice lil cloud when you accelerate.

Well I havn't rebuild the turbo yet. BUt the total cost was just under 700 canadian. Im pretty stoked on everything. I have found the fuel srew, which is hidden under the intake manifold on the IP. BUt I am still waiting for my pyro.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm watching closely.I'm curious,could a person use a turbo manifold from a a 2lt on a 2l block.Personally I don't know enough about either,just thinking out loud

Yes you can!

Holly s*** you were right, my tires are 35" ha! I think I forgot to enter that they are 16" rims on the tire calculator when I first checked.

Nice solution on the manifold to turbo flange.

315/75 r16. 75 is sidewall ratio. Side wall height is 75% of the tread width.

No wonder! They're 35"s not 33"s ;)

Nice work!! Have you hooked your PCV breather up pre-turbo already? If so, that might be where the blue smoke is coming from. It doesn't take much. Just an idea. Probably is worn turbo oil seals as you said. Where on VI are you? You should come out to one of our cruiser meetings or wheeling runs: CA.BC- Vancouver Island Cruisers

I am in courtenay. I will be heading to legends valley music festival in late august with my dirty cruiser. In lake cowichan. When is the next cruiser meet?

Oh, and no I havn't hooked up the valve cover breather yet so it isn't that. Its possible that this engine has lots of oil pressure and its too much for the turbo to handle? My friend says some turbos have an oil restriction but I will look into that too. Spinning the turbo with my fingers, it feels pretty smooth and tight so I hope its an easy fix but whatever. She's a smoker for now:)

We usually meet third week of each month. Furthest North that we have a meeting is Duncan usually, so won't work for you as a regular thing I guess...thats a long drive. We will be up your way this summer doing a multi-day club expedition though.

Expedition you say, hmmm? Are families going? where? can non-club members go?

It's a sticky post in our club forum, just check it out. Last year we explored around mid-island Gold River Nootka Sound Strathcona area, this year I think they are planning on going North from there up the Nimkish valley and exploring up beyond there. There have not been families included on the expeditions the last couple years, but I suppose it could happen in the future. I would have taken my kids if they were a bit older. The club is not really strict with the whole membership thing. Basically if you're a good guy, a cruiserhead, live on VI and want to hang out with the club, you're in.

GOOD NEWS!!! I recently scratched heads with a good mechanic friend of mine and came to the conclusion that my truck was getting excessive crank case pressure due to my vinegar bottle catch can. I welded a bung on pre-turbo and routed my valve breather there. The truck doesn't smoke any more than a good ol' diesel should. This was my original plan. Just working out the bugs. YAY!! no turbo rebuild.

I thought it looked like it went to the bottle and didn't look like it vented to atmosphere. Nice job on the turbo by the way. I personally like not to vent into the intake air as it will gum your intake with grime and dirt, but it would be cool for you just to drive it for a bit and enjoy it.

The return is post air filter. do you think this is bad? Where would I vent to?

Where is this dirt you speak of?

The blowby is both oily and carbon dust as well as combustion gasses. Ithas a tendency to coat and build up on everything. Coating your intake valve especially screwes up intake flow, but mostly it's just a dirty deal all round. In gas engines it increases detonation risk, but I don't know if it hurts combustion performance in a diesel. Lots of diesels just vent to atmosphere like the 3b beside the block.

Well I just copied the stock setup from a volkswagen
that had an over head cam. This is where I stole the turbo from, so I figured it was a good way to let everything breath. Are TD volkswagens a bad example to follow?

3b's are a totally different setup as they breath through the lifters. 2L is over head cam and doesn't have this.

Hell yes. Digging the setup, I wanna find a 2LT to throw into my new to me 95 Taco. The damn v6 won't die though

I vent my 2LTE crank case fumes through a hose under the vehicle. My intake was super gummed up from the crank case fumes and it was a lot of work to clean. It was also built up on the backs of the intake valves. I tried a catch can for a little while but found it was a PITA. I'd never run the fumes in the intake again. I love the stink pipe though. Sometimes after a fresh oil change I get some smoke coming out from under the vehicle. People think somethings hot or on fire...haha.

Hmmmm? well I drove 30 km's with the catch can and I only got one drop of oil. But I don't want a gummed up intake either. Oh the choices! So you say to just dump the vent straight to the road like a 3b? I can do that, easy peasy. Now I just have to weld that port closed. Well thats not too bad, rather just a minor hickup.

So I took her out on the freeway today. The turbo has added 10 psi of boost. mostly medium and top end power. I personally dont care that I dont get much bottom end power since the truck came with 4:1 transfer case gears. My speedo is not calibrated but i was keeping up to traffic in a 120 km zone. So thats more that enough power for this turtle. I mostly just collect firewood, seaweed and leaves for the garden with this truck. I am very happy now that its not puffing black everywhere I go.

And yes, I am still awaiting my pyrometer.
