So I’m taking a little detour. Things will be warming up here soon and I need to get ready for the summer months in the mountains. Plus I’m just not feeling Stripping paint and body work right now.

I bought an old 1975HiLo trailer for restoration back when I lived in a property that had H O A rules so I needed something I could park below the fence height. Now I don’t need to meet that requirement so I’m going to turn it into more of a cabin on wheels. I’m basically going to strip away the collapsible top and just build a new cabin on the frame.

The problem I had was the wheels stuck up into big wheel wells inside the cabin. It comes equipped with some offset axles that were over the springs so I did a turn and flip SOA, and gained at least 12” so now I can aluminate those wheel wells in the cabin and it should be a little better suited for the trail..

So I just can’t get in the mood to start bodywork on the troopy, so what is the logical thing to do? Start another frame off project.......what was I thinking 🤔

I know this is off the board but I thought I’d give a quick update since I’m taking the summer off from my FJ45 project. The cabin on wheels turned out fine just the right size and good ground clearance I towed it up to my property in Idaho and got a rough road cut to the top of the Property. There were several white knuckle moments cutting the road and getting the trailer set in place but now I can rest enjoy it. I added a little deck as well.

On my second day here I was going for a little walk and ran into my first mountain lion.....😳.

Any updates on the 45?
I took the summer off and spent most of it in Idaho. Just got back from an elk hunt with my son ( no joy but a great trip). In a week or two I will start the body work...drivetrain and chassis are all done and ready for a new top coat!

The temperatures are dropping nicely so I’m easing back into some body work. I got a Headstart on stripping last spring but still have a long way to go. My DIY media blasting didn’t go very well so I’m trying to chemical strip so far with pretty good success it’s pretty mild stuff and I brush on large areas and let it sit for at least a day or two, and actually if it dries that’s even better because it comes off nice with the light wire wheel on the grinder. In addition I got the rubber mats Out of the foot wells not much fun but the heat gun and some scrapers got it free. I wish I had some of that adhesive be used that stuff is indestructible😜

Chemical stripping and sanding ain’t going to be an option for me just too dang much work and too much mess. I called around for bids and leadtime for local media blasters but everyone’s very busy and very expensive. So I thought I’d give it one more try at home, and I added a little extra CFM from the rental shop.

After 90 minutes and $20 worth of media I got the firewall and dashboard stripped. It’s not necessarily a fun job but it is

satisfying. It’s kind a like cleaning your car with a pencil eraser a lot to do and small bites at a time. I’ll keep trying it for a little bit and if it’s too much I’ll take it into the pros

Today was my test run to see if I wanted to strip the whole thing and the answers no I’m gonna go ahead with the media blaster and let a pro do it. However I did clear up the worst rust areas on the floorboards and got a better sense of what I’m dealing with the passenger side had been patched with some steel plates and the floor pan underneath is Swiss cheese. The body mount on the passenger side is shot, I can’t imagine I’ll find one so I’ll have to fab something up.

Hi Guys - doing a quick sanity check before I spend hours and dollars on tub stripping and rust repair. As far as I can tell there is not a supplier for a FJ45 troopy replacement tub, the only thing I found was some Al reproduction tubs for HJ45 ( clearly an after market tub, flat floors, etc).

If you are aware of a true FJ 45 troopy tub source I would like to look into it.

Many thanks in advance.

I did notice that, but it may be worth contacting them. It’s the only aftermarket steel LWB tub I’ve seen. They were recommended to me by an acquaintance in Holland.

Only noticed the sold out because it did look like it would would have been a good option. Sadly a very nice 84 HJ47RV from Australia got totaled in Phoenix going on six years ago. Front end was destroyed but the back was actually is decent shape. These are the ambulance doors off that 84.

If timing would have been right would probably let the tub go for few hundred dollars. I know the troopy is long gone.

Timing is everything - I think my decision is made for me. The tub is not not terrible, but it will take a good amount of time and $$ to get her ready for paint. Plan to get her to the media blaster this Friday.

Not exactly what it is but have a pot for a sand blaster. May be able to hook it up to feed a cabinet. Has some hoses and a nozzle. I have no use for it and free to anyone who wants it. Not sure where you are in the valley but that is where it's located.

Thanks - I have a blaster, and tried to DIY but required too much compressed air and media, and a real mess!!!!! The older I get the more I am willing to let go of jobs that aren't much fun.....

One of the old timers here in the valley lived in small house on a small yard. He was doing a frame off on his FJ45 and blasted the frame and can in his backyard. Had some plastic up to try and contain the dust. Think this was about twenty five years ago. Believe he was in his mid sixties at the time. I've had this thing for a few years. Someone I knew was getting evicted and was leaving it. Could probably get enough air to use but can't see ever getting a cabinet. Not that I would do it but could see the EPA getting involved sand blasting in a backyard today.

I was loading up the body parts to take to the media blaster, and the dang U-Haul trailer with the drop gate wasn’t wide enough to fit everything in so I had to go up and over kind of a pain in the neck but ended up getting it to the shop this morning may not get the parts back till after Christmas, everyone’s really busy right now
