#notlocked

By owning a factory locked 80 series I wouldn't buy a factory locked again most likely. While my lockers work, they are slow to engage and disengage; often requiring backing, turning circles, and cussing. And not to mention the problems incurred if one of the factory lockers breaks inside the axle. The next big project on my 80 will be swapping my factory lockers for Harrop lockers.

$200ish range. Not a cheap Autozone but I don't plan on running a bunch of accessories so not sure if I need a top of the line optima. A deep cycle would probably be good too so I don't have to worry about doing a battery tender, although I drive my 80 at least a few times a month.

The 3 battery sizes that fit in an 80 in the stock location that I know of are 24f, 27f or 34r. The biggest is the 27f. Keep in mind an Optima from 10 years ago is not the same Optima you can buy today. I'd buy the higest line your local parts store has in a 27f. It will come with at least a 3 year warranty and 650+ CCA. Batteries Plus in Flowood has a nice sealed battery available but it's pricey.

I've heard the same, but I have had a couple yellow tops and so far so good for now. Got about a year on the latest one. I have a battery tray for the optima and didnt want to fool with getting another one right now so I picked up another one. If it becomes a problem then I will see about getting a different mount.

I won a Yellow Top at the Ramble 2014. It sat in the garage for at least 1.5 years before I installed it. Cranked that 2F like it was a day old. Ran it down to dead twice and it has always come back strong.

Optima production was moved to Mexico in late 2000s (?) and quality has gone downhill since. It's a crap shoot on what you will get. I have a 10+ year old yellow top in my crawler and had a red in the 2001 4Runner. I've had to warranty a couple of reds.

The other issue with the Optimas is that they like to be treated with kid gloves. Once they're drained, they may or may not come back to life. I even bought an Optima charger in hopes I could revive a few I picked up as dead off of friends. Mixed results there.

For a DD, I've had better luck with Advance Gold. Buy the biggest battery you can with the best warranty you can find from a place that will back it up. I only run lead-acid in my DDs for ease of replacement, ease of charging, and cost. I can't justify the cost of an AGM or gel cell for how I use my asphalt-riders.

@AndyO78FJ40 i use the X2 power 27F blue top battery and love it in my 80. I've tested it by leaving my headlights and dome on all night to come back in the morning and crank my truck up. I too used the coupon lol northstar makes the x2 stuff and the developers from odyssey moved to northstar. Or at least that's what is circling around on the internet. Rumors aside. The x2 is a great battery. Ran it in my old 4Runner too. It had a security system that I set up to have a constant drain on the batttery since the tailgate switch on the firstgens are wired weird. Basically always had power going to it so it would trip the alarm if it was opened. Went out of town a week and my truck cranked. It didn't last 2 days with a regular battery.

I'm tied to an Optima in my buggy due to a Blue Torch Fab battery box. Wish I wasn't...
