How rare is a 79 fj55? I have come across one and already have a 74 fj55. Which one would be worth more in the end after a complete restoration? the 79 is pretty much rust free while the 74 has typical rust, everywhere. What are you guy's thoughts on 79 vs. 74 when it comes to a complete restoration?

Thanks, ryan

79 very rare and if rust free a much better candidate in my opinion. I dont know what it would be worth. but the good body is excellent. and the 79s are very very hard to find.

Thanks

I strongly agree however I do like the tail lights on the older ones better.

think the sheet metal on the older ones is much better than the later ones.........most of the later than 74s that I have seen are rusted badly and I have seen an abandoned 69 with the rear window open for over 10 years with intact sheet metal except for the floorboards...............ideal would be a older body with 79 guts........would enjoy any comments from the group about my observation on sheetmetal differences and why?........by the way has anyone ever seen a 1980 pig?

Well, this is were I am at. They are both all original and I want them to stay that way. The 74 is pumkin with lots of rust, but nothing not fixable. the 79 has dime sized rust in one spot but has been in an accident previously and would need quiet a bit of straightening out. So considering that both of them would be bone stock, maybe just do both? But still I am leaning towards the 79, it drives so nice.

ryan, my experience is what Lou said. older ones must have different metal... but anything can be fixed. If the 79 was well undercoated it could do fine.

I am in the early stages of doing a 69 with 77 guts. Even the 69 parts showing bare metal didn't hardly flash this winter covered in snow.

I drove the 77 all winter and every time I slammed the door something fell off. lost the tailpipe yesterday:) . It has been called the nastiest vehicle in town. But is soooo reliable, doesn't smoke, gets 17 miles a gallon. Of course the time it would take to remove and repair the rockers, body mounts, fender lips, floor pans would be enormous. Eventually I'll need the parts off it and will have to put it to rest... then I'll be looking back at it as knowledge gained and money well spent.
