Man i think I'd go for the 73, chop the rear off and just bolt the 75 roof panel on.I think that should work, they would both be folding windshields, right?
how big a tray do you really need/want? The 75 frame is way too long and you're going to cut it down anyways.

I like the idea of being able to lose the top and doors and then there is pretty much nothing left to destroy if the weather is right.

75 will be chopped for sure.

Availability and cost are an issue as well. I can be in a 75 with AC and heat that is not destroyed pretty cheap.

Well, I’m rolling to the Con this year in my PZJ70. Same wheelbase as a 40 series

I’ve driven with @gifu and his 79 series on the Con as well in the past.

Is that bed shortened at the front? Looks like maybe 10-12" ? Those proportions look way better then a normal pickup. I'd rock that with a narrow-nose front end

Sure. 100% better and it has fuel injection but it would cost me about $25,000 more up front and I don't want to have that as my starting point.
Me and everyone else that heavily modded a 70 series have found out that these mods are hard to justify in future resale value aka you will loose uour ass on it . Build it 100% to your personal preference and with the intention to keep as modded 7x’s are almost impossible to sell as the past has shown us .

Yeah I don't do good on getting my money back on my builds. Used to it.

Why not put a 79 cab with bobbed bed or tray on a 80 frame ? It would give you coil suspension and upgrades axles at the same time . Seeing how many 80’s are running the rubicon and other trails I think that is the golden ticket . Plus you could choose a hopped up powertrain with a modern automatic for easier wheeling ? I always did it the hard way with toyota powertrain and manual trans and hindsight 50/50 I kinda regret that now . If I would have put a LS and auto trans in my 73 crawler it probably would’ve still existed

I don't want Toyota axles. I've gone down that road and it's just gonna be expensive and I'll end up with tons in the end.

Autos are way easier to wheel for sure.

It’s always gone be expensive, building a set of tons with the right parts and linking the 75 or 79 will cost a pretty penny to . To bad I just sold Patches my fj60 crawler that would have been a perfect parts donor with the already build tons under it , full hydro , doubler , Atlas and some nice raceline wheels with 43” stickies on them

Yeah finding something like that with all the parts would be nice. ****ing tires are $800-900 each so yeah, not expecting cheap but I don't want Toyota axles. They hate 40s.

I find the 75 pickup truck cabin and seating position so uncomfortable, I can't imagine sitting in one for several full days on a trail ride weekend. I get mildly annoyed whenever I have to test drive our customer 75's more then a few miles. (I am 5'8" for reference)

The longer +98 HZJ79 cab would be a lot better, more room to mount good seats higher up in the right position for wheeling
Hey Matt, I found that removing the small rubber stop that's at the top of the seat in my 75 gave me a bit more angle to recline that helped a bunch. I'm 5' 9" and that seemed to really help but like you say, we are all different so what works for some might not work for others.

Cheers, James

Interested on your tire size and locker setup for the rubicon. Would love to do that trail in my beater bj74 once i have a rear locker sorted. Just recently found out my front diff has a full spool installed so that was a nice surprise.

a BJ74 with 33-35" tires and at least a one locker front or rear will be completely fine depending on your driving skill level.. personally I prefer locked front and open rear for most of my wheeling to avoid rear steer/understeer

Sounds like my setup. Currently on 35's, locked front, lsd rear and welded sliders. I've been wheeling for about ten years but have never done anything too gnarly like rubicon. shooting for this year.

Onur that sounds like a great setup. Looking forward to seeing photos of it out there putting in work.

Sorry for the thread high jack. Carry on.

You have plenty of truck. Personally I don't think Rubicon was actually super difficult, (depending on your pacing) it's just really long and remote. Be prepared with tools/spares. I've done it solo twice in my FJ62, in 2020 and 2023

An idea...
Buy Kate back, recycle the body and put a new take of J79 cab and front clip on it?

:D
