Regardless of price, its a very nice restoration and clean install with the engine.

Might be a bad cap that's not letting the radiator fill from the overflow as it cools off.
It would be strange to have a water pump pull so hard that it collapses an upper hose before the t-stat opens on a conventional flow engine, but I suppose it's possible.
It would be very strange for a head gasket to cause that.
I suppose he could have molded it that way for clearance.

All you have to see is "TLC", I'm sure it's really nice regardless. There is a high end shop around the corner from me that has been working on some guys '76 FJ55 almost non-stop for over a year, they said he is in for over $50k and that is without a motor swap. It is pretty sweet though, he kept it totally stock looking but it's got a super high end stereo, AC and power windows that work by tilting the stock handles forward and back. Here's some pics of it:

Head gaskets going bad can create a vacuum, sometimes that vaccuum (or pressure) can be so strong it can blow up a radiator.
For that kind of cash I think I'd cross over to the dark side and buy a Mercedes G Class... Or a classic Rover with a full time mechanic to keep it working most of the time.

There's one on the Chicago CL for $750 that's been for sale a lot longer than that one. One of you big dick "I can build my own better than that" types should step up and buy it.
