May 71 one owner sitting for 5+ years in the dirt; I am beginning the process of getting it running. So far getting the roaches, ants, spiders and the carnivore that left the bones in the skid plate eliminated….

If anyone who has any suggestions on where to start I could really use some help on this, I am truly out of my element; I was an early bronco guy until about a month ago.

I spent today getting the drums off so it would roll, I ordered new cylinders, shoes, springs and lines but believe this is just the beginning.

A few questions from a new guy:
Where can you find the soft fuel line that screws into the side of the tank and back down to the hard line under the pass side frame rail?
Not a big fan of the clamp down driver’s front seat, does anyone make a bolt in deal for a seat?

Thanks

Hi All:

Welcome aboard "SMerrill!" :)

Nice original rig! Notice it lacks front lock-out hubs, but has the factory drive flanges.

Where are you located - it looks tropical! :D

I assume you mean "where can I purchase the fuel line that goes from the tank to the fuel pump?" Spector Off-Road in California for sure - new, maybe used as well. Proffitt's Cruisers in Colorado has a boneyard of old rigs; they might be able to supply a used example.

For a replacement front seat, your best bet is to find a good condition, used bucket seat you like at a local wrecking yard and adapt it to the OE seat frame.

Good luck with your "new" rig!

Regards,

Alan

good shape

Wow,

That is in nice shape considering it has sat, you are luck there.

What are you looking to do a full restore or touch up and drive it?

Give us an idea of what you want to do. Are you looking to lift it and use as a trail vehicle on the weekends, or do you want to restore it and use it as a daily driver? The answer to those questions will help us to help you.

Congratulations on your purchase. Welcome to the madness. Now just open your wallet and close your eyes and you'll have a blast.

Must have been sitting UNDER COVER in the dirt cos it sure looks nice.

(That climate looks wet and rust-promoting but the cruiser looks in top nick.)

Welcome :flipoff2:

For now I just want to get it running, something to play with on the weekends and an occational trip to the hunt camp. The truck only has 23K miles and almost everything is original, It was puchased at a local toyota dealership here in North East Florida. The best part is the dealer installed warn still works...

:beer:Welcome!!! and NICE CRUISER!! Why can't I find something like this in GA??

Congrats  and welcome!!! Looks like you have a good platform to start with... Have fun!

Order a Spector Off Road paper catalog, It's good anytime reading especially when you are not near a computer. Lots of Ideas in there even if you buy elsewhere.

It came with a hard top originally but was discarded by the PO and I threw out the soft top he installed because it was in such bad shape. I plan on running soft 1/2 doors and bikini top so I stored the full doors that were on it.
I order a catalog but according to the on line site the fuel line I need is disregarded. The tank appears like a 12M 1.25 male tread sticking out so I just need to convert over to a standard 3/8 nipple sticking out so I can use a normal line and clamp set up.

Ther are alot of vendors for these. Try some others before changing over to a standard thread.

I'm sure you will be able to find something.

Sweet rig welcome to the 71 family and to mud. Of course keep us post with your progress and lots of pics.

Are you sure that it's 23K miles, not 123K? If so, you've found a diamond in the rough. As for the seats, there are plenty of threads discussing different options. Take a look at the FAQs and do a few searches, you'll find a bunch of options.

The fuel line is a minor issue and you should be able to find one fairly easily. With everything else you decide to do, just look around on ih8mud and you'll find a lot of help and ideas. When you've searched all you can and can't find the answer you need, just post a question and you'll be surprised at how quickly others come to your assistance.

Welcome!

Sweet rig. It looks good for sitting for 5 years. It looks to be a good starting point, alot better looking than my 71 "starting point".

Welcome!

The one owner is a buddy so I assume the mileage is correct, the truck was a high school grad present in 72.

I JB welded a fitting on the tank will accept a standard fuel nipple so I think I am ok on that for now.

NEW QUESTION: The original tires were not holding air so I removed and took the wheels/ tires and took too the powder coater.
(Can a stock FJ 1972 wheel will fit 33x10.5 bfg m/t tires I just purchased, based on the forum this is ok but marginal?)

Some more pictures.

Should be fine. Looking good, and progressing nicely.

Well I spent some money over the last few weeks.
Had the rusty steel’s powder coated with the front grill and put some new shoes on them, I love pizza cutters...
I have all the parts to rebuild the entire brakes, clutch cylinder/slave, 4 inch lift kit, seat covers so, and hopefully I can start on that tomorrow.
Looks kind of tight with 33x10.5 without the springs installed, I sure hope it fits in the garage when done.
Had the same problem with the EB, if it was empty it rubbed the roll bar.
