Turned out to be a 73' Pig

I have found a '71 FJ55 that I am interested in. Where is the best resource to find out everything (ok...maybe not everything but as much as possible) about the '71 models? Any help would be most appreciated !!!

The pig is stock with the original engine that has been re-built, 3-sp. tranny, etc.. Exterior has been painted solid white but the interior is green/black. Originally, the exterior was white / pumpkin.

Does anyone know the exterior colors of the '71's that had green/black interiors? I would want to go back with the 2-tone paint but want to see my choices that would go w/ the interior.

Pictures would be GREAT.

Also, for a very clean stock '71 with very minimal rust and in excellent condition, new tires, clean and in-tact interior..... what is it worth?:)

Thanks.

Russell.

I would say the interior has been painted too if its green and black. Pigs have white interior stock with all the padding and dash and things in black. Inside the door sills should be the same color as on the outside so pumpkin if that was the original color on this one. Look on the first page of Trollhole's buildup thread and you can see a lot of interior pics everything is pretty much white. My 73 was all white as well.

Last night I unearthed some green and black too. I wonder if the primer doesn't age to a pea green? I found mine under the door hinges...under the top was green and under the bottom hinge was black.

Pics Forthcoming

Thanks for all the good information. I will get to see the Pig in person tomorrow. I am not sure if the seats are black/green or if he was talking about the interior metal or what. He just said "the vehicle received professional full body off restoration" 2 years ago including sand blasting the frame and coating it with rust-proof paint, etc. Also has new interior, new headliner, new upholstery, engine overhaul, tranny upgrade, rebuilt carb, new front windshield, new wires, new battery, new tires/wheels, etc... Not sure how professional, extensive, & thorough the body-off restoration actually was.....

It now has front fiberglass fenders that were purchased from some company out of CA. I am hopeful there are not a lot of rust problems.

The original color was white / pumpkin. When the new paint was added 2 yrs. ago, everything was painted white (including the seals, door jams, etc..) so it should be ready to lay down a new 2-tone paint job. Daughter likes the sky blue / white combo. OK...getting a little a head of myself.

I will take pics tomorrow and probably make a decision whether to buy or not. From the initial 5 pics he sent me, it looks in excellent condition but they are grainy shots. Can't wait to see her in person.:bounce::bounce2::bounce2::bounce:

Will report back tomorrow night (unless I am in the shop cleaning her up !!!!)

Saw the Pig

Saw the pig today in Emory, Texas. It turned out to be a 73' model. The PO had around 50 pics of the restoration process. Basically, it was a rust bucket when he bought it with rusted out floor boards, front fenders, & rear quarter panels. The pictures showed how the body was removed and then the new paint was added. Curiously....there were no pics of the old rust spots getting cut out nor any pics of new metal being added. I pulled back the floor mats and saw what appeared to be a good solid floor in it now. Everything is white.

Showed pictures of the rusty frame being sand blasted & painted. I could not see any rust areas at all on the exterior/interior (but it may be covered up with white paint !!!).

I drove her to a local Pit Lube and borrowed their pit so I could look underneath. The engine started the 1st time but the battery was weak. Had to jump her off the 2nd time. There was play in the steering as could be expected.

When I got underneath, I saw that the rear fender wells had been replaced with fiberglass and the lower rear quarter panels also appeared to be fiberglass. Spoke w/ Jeremiah Proffitt and he said they were probably metal with bondo on the outside. I really think they were fiberglass. You could start at the top of the vehicle (on the outside) and knock on the body and you could tell everything was metal down to the lower panels. Maybe I am wrong but sure seemed like fiberglass.

The exterior looks great but you could see several rough areas under the belly. Looks like the fiberglass was bolted in place metal plates (like washers) with caulk added where the metal & fiberglass met. The body mounts looked good but some weak areas were noted that appeared to be filled with a foam-type material, especially on the angle metal pieces that slope down towards the bottom outside of the body. The engine & drive lines looked good.

All glass was good. All rubber seals need replacing around glass, doors, etc... Rear glass has to come down manually (don't work). The white paint job is average to good. The title numbers matched the frame plate.

The ad originally ran 15 months ago and the PO indicated he had $26k in the vehicle but would settle for $10k. He has owned it for around 8 years. I believe the resto work was done in Oklahoma. He is still asking $10,000.

I am not an expert on FJ55's but I knew in a few moments that I was not interested in the vehicle. For that reason, I failed to even check out the 4wd or the hubs. I assume they worked fine.

This vehicle may be something that someone on this list would be interested in for the right price. I never spoke to the owner directly today. He just left the keys at his office and gave instructions to his assistant to let me drive it and do whatever I liked. I never made an offer. I am looking for a rust-free (as close as possible) basically stock Pig. With all the fiberglass work on this vehicle, it will never be "stock".

Now.......if you buy it for what it is (pretty decent fixed up FJ55 that will never be re-sold in the future as a super clean/restored Pig), and if you buy it right (much cheaper), you will have a vehicle with potential.

Here are 3 pics of the vehicle. I will post up 2 more and the seller's contact information in a few minutes.

More Pics

Here are the other 2 pics of the vehicle and the contact information. I feel I have made an honest assessment of this vehicle. I am not knocking it at all. It is just not what I am looking for. For the right price, it does have great potential.

Just talked w/ Seller

Just got off the phone w/ the seller and he tells me that all rusted out places were replaced with METAL, not fiberglass so I stand corrected. He said the only fiberglass on the vehicle are the front fenders. He would not tell me what his bottom dollar was so you are on your own. He just seemed to be open to offers. He only uses the vehicle on accasion to go fishing with his children.
