Just about got everything tore down just about as far as we’re going. Broke the bolt at the bottom of the vent window, so welded another in. Probably should run a die over it to clear more threads. Cleaning, painting and adding messy por15 to inside of doors. Also, need to add new rubber to back windows in the top.

Been busy working on the long bed. Got the door felts and window rail rubber installed. Took the heater out and cleaned up some electrical issues that was causing the battery to drain overnight. Broke a few tabs on heater core and welder I took the core to said no hood welding. He could braise it, but would need to heat the core and that’d probably melt solder holding the ends on the core and ruin the core. MacGyvered a solution with a metal band and light spot welds. I think it’ll hold.

Also, adjusted oil pressure yesterday and took compression readings. I was pleased to get more pressure and decent compression numbers. Been a productive couple of days.

Update time: all new window felts and weatherstripping is in. New rubber seals around corner windows and newly cut (and rebroken during install) rear glass and rubber seal are in. Completely tore down 2 front axles and 1 rear to build a rear axle with all new seals and bearings and a disc brake front axle with all new stuff. Still a work in progress. Rear axle is first and parts are arriving to begin assembly. Built a rear axle bearing puller out of some big washers and a long 7/16” bolt. Along with a few 2x4s, the bearings popped out easily.

Also, finished building a spare tire carrier for the 40. But, back to the drawing board bc the ambulance doors hit the mounting plate holding the catch pin. Ughhh.

Also, added rubber plugs to holes below window vents. For those that have holes there and can’t get Toyota plugs, here’s a solution. Just had to barely enlarge the holes. Works great!

Time for an update. I tore down an FJ40 rear axle that I had in my spare parts stash. New axle bearings, seals and pinion seal installed. Cleaned up an extra front diff from an FJ55 and put it in that axle. Rebuilt 4 wheel cylinders and installed them. Got the rear of the 45 lifted and ready to start pulling the old axle. Going to replace all the suspension and sway bushings as well and put in longer rear shackles. Only have had a little time for the 45 lb as the 45 sb had a broken fd cable and 4wd light not working and also been working on a friend’s FJ62.

Got both out. I was going to quit for the day and decided I’d pound on the front pin just for kicks. First hit and the thing moved just a little. I couldn’t believe it and I couldn’t stop since the first blow yielded a little fruit.

Rear axle out. Any helpful hints on getting 60 year old spring pins and bushings out? Heat and beat is the current plan, but I’d love some soln that will work from my couch if possible.

Air hammer and assorted bits to drive out the pin and shackles. Keep the nut over the pins loosely until you have moved it enough to prevent galling the threads as far as possible.

Nevermind, seems you had an easy ride.

Yeah, less than one day beating on those with success is definitely “an easy ride” 😝.

On the road! All new rear brake lines plumbed, rear wheel cylinders rebuilt, and rebuilt rear axle in. Runs great. Different truck from how I got her. Next is to start building a disc brake front axle. Seriously considering going full Monty and swapping in a rebuilt F engine when I do the axle. The plan will at least be disc brakes up front and Saginaw PS. Looking forward to driving it as is while I build the front.

Onward!

Mike

Just ran out of time today. No rear shocks either. Got it together and jumped in. No brakes put me back in the garage pretty quick though! Not a huge fan of drums up front.

I haven't done anything with the springs. Thanks for the observation. I wonder if the overload springs from a 55 pack would work?? I have a set of those and a set of 40 packs too.
