Finally out of the latest rabbit hole with this 45. I don’t even know where to begin actually. The wiring was a complete mess. Fixing it was definitely a check your assumptions kinda problem with multiple interfering problems caused by mixed wires from a PO that ended up shorting and melting together. Even after separating and repairing everything it has taken some doing to get all the lights, the light switch, the external regulator, …. all working together. Strange how the simplest thing of “why are my brake lights on?” led to such a mess. Guess I really should be thankful that that was the question instead of “why is there smoke and flames coming from under the dash!”.

Now to button everything back up.

Onward!

From someone who has had the why is there smoke coming out from under the dash to…f—k there’s a fire…to grab a fire extinguisher and put it out to having the fire department get a call and come out and use their thermal camera to insure everything is out. You definitely avoided a potential huge issue looking thru your pics! There’s now a fire extinguisher in all my vehicles.

But it forced me to completely rewire the ‘73 RHD 45. So that was a plus!

@Lifelong40Fan did you order new wiring from @Coolerman ?

No, I have one for an early 40, but I’m going to run my repaired harness. I simply want to drive this truck for awhile. It’s definitely worn the dunce cap way more than all my rigs. I’m ready to work on something else.

Well, life changes. One daughter is getting married in October, another got engaged for a December wedding, and our aging DD van died on I30 on a recent trip to NM requiring an alternator swap in a parking lot (felt like a vice grip garage episode) which got me thinking it may be time to replace the van with something newer. So, I posted the project 45 for sale on FB just to see if there was interest. Turns out there was a lot of interest.

Hated to see it go, but it’s going to a good home and the new owner is previous 40 owner who has been looking for a 45 for quite a while.

The long bed’s not going anywhere though.

Congratulations on the family increasing in size!!!

Interesting that you didn’t post it here first…any reason? With the highest concentration of 45 owners in the US (maybe world?) and those potentially interested in buying one I figured it was a natural first choice. You’ve sold more 45’s than me. But maybe there’s something I’m missing?

I’m really not sure, Chris. I listed and sold my fixed top on FB bc it was a very nice rig and the majority of us on this forum want cheaper and more utilitarian trucks. It sold there for asking fairly quickly. My daughter getting married in December had an opportunity last week on a doable $40k project home near us but we needed to move quickly, so I just put the removable top on the 45 FB page without a price telling any interested parties to contact me bc I wasn’t sure we’d be able to act fast enough since we were in NM at the time and couldn’t see the home. And if we couldn’t get the home, I didn’t want to be committed to selling the 45. I got lots of immediate interest, ended up getting the house and sold the 45. It all happened kinda fast, just like how things usually happen for me. I see so many similarities of life with baseball. I love baseball and watch it every night. Long draughts of nothing and the game is often won and lost by seemingly simple plays. You always have to be ready for what might happen knowing what to do if things work out in a 1000 possible ways, but usually don’t work out and you are left waiting for the next pitch and a different count. But, I’ll stop with my baseball analogies bc they usually bring eye rolls, at least from my kids!

Onward!
Mike
