Need a 3speed or transfer case part?

Hello,

I have a 1963 3speed on the tree type transmission with the shifting arms that stick out the side and the transfer case bolted to it. Should you need a part let me know. I am in Minnesota, USA. I have a 4 speed now and in the past no one wanted the 3speed.

Bill

early 3 speed tranny

We have the tranny and transfercase out and almost dismantled. I guess we have the early 3 speed that was only used in 61-62 and part of 63 right?

I'm gonna need some parts. I'll make a list and hope you can help me with partnumbers for bearings, seals etc.

The first and reverse gear is worn a bit. So I could use new first and reverse gears. The gears of the newer 3 speed look alot like these. Also the amount of teeth are correct. Are those interchangable?

If someone can teach me more about these transmission I'll be greatfull.

Thanks.

partnumbers

We did completely disassamble the gearbox and tranny. First gear is, as said, quit worn. So need to think about how to fix it. Bill, I'll send you a PM one of these days, would like to know if the first and reverse gears in the tranny you have are OK. Rest of the tranny and transfer case look good. Synchromesh rings are OK. Some bearings are noisy and seals are dried. We think the tranny has been out before: we found some liquid gasket the housing of the input axle seal (part AR in the picture). Probably the input shaft seal has been replaced.

So we need to source seals, bearings and gaskets (or make our own). We are surprised that some bearings are Metric and other (needle) bearings are imperial. I stole some pics from the SOR website so I can tell you what I need. Hope they don't mind (but I think they also stole them of a Toyota parts book.) Most parts are not available at SOR, so it will probably not be easy to find. The ball bearings are metric (6305, 6306, 6307) so that won't be the biggest problem. needle bearings are imperial, that will be harder to find here. A worn shaft can be reproduced (Q), gaskets can be made ourselves, and for the seals we have yet to check but we should be able find those. But it will be the best if we can source the parts with the Original Toyota partnumbers. So,

Question 1: can the newer gears (63 on) be used in this -62 transmission, maybe after some modification? As I understand they have the same amount of teeth but the gears are wider so stronger. In the parts book it looks quite the same. Can anyone tell me more about this???

Question 2: would someone with a 62 partsbook be so kind to look up the partnumbers for me? (John/LITP?) Would of course prefer the 10 digit numbers if possible. It might be a good start to look what is available and what parts might be used in later transmissions.

When I'm ready finding all the parts I'll post the numbers, available crossreferences and sizes in the sticky part nr. thread.

I would want to know the numbers of the following parts:

Figure 60A Transmission
A, C, P, Y, AG, AL, AP, AQ, and/or the gasket set

Figure 60B Transmission gears
I, J, O, S, T, V

Figure 67A transfercase

Thank you very much in advance. Paul.

I'm in the process of looking up both '61-5 digit and '62-10 part numbers, I'll have them up tonight:beer:

interesting to see. i'll be tearing into annies transmission sometime after the caravan for kids run. we've found she pops out of first gear when under load, would like to find out why, also get an occasional weird sound, like a bearing not seated in the race or something....hope i don't find the issues you've found

the first set of numbers are 5 digit series with prefix out of '61 catalog, these may be helpful with NOS items. the second set of numbers are the 10 digit out of '62 catalog

Good luck in advance, for every 200 part #'s I've looked up pre-1965 I've found 1 to be still in the system:beer:

Wow that was fast.

Yes it was. It's raining here to day and figure I would spend some time checking the micro-fiche then cross referencing in a price sheet catalogs I have.

All seals and bearings you might get lucky using the numbers on them. Guessing gaskets will be hand made. Maybe get luck and the one between the transmission and transfer case would close. The cover for the PTO on the transfer case is a little different. I remember a 1962 transfer case had a later PTO attached to it. That was probably the most mix of parts I've ever seen on these early T/T. Seems when they went bad a later T/T was used instead. Finding parts can be hard since they were only used less then three years and production numbers were low.

Guess I go and see what I can figure out on early soft top parts.

Using google I found out quite some parts are still available (seals and bearings). I put out a request for the list at the dealer but no answer yet.

these may be helpful with NOS items.

Any change of finding these NOS gears?

O FS10-33451 33461-69010 GEAR, REVERSE

S FS10-33351 33331-69010 GEAR

V FS10-33431 33421-69011

Maybe somebody knows something?

Paul.

Update. Almost all the seals and bearings of the tranny are available. Will update the complete list later. I'm trying to source some side-shifter transmission gears now in the USA. I have someone checking this out for me.

I have one other option: I can get a later floor shifting three speed here in the Netherlands. In the parts books the early and later look very familiair. Same amount of teeth, same bearings etc. Read somewhere that the later gears are thicker.

Need some help here: Who could tell me if these later gears would or would not fit my early side-shifter tranny?

Little update. It took some time to search the gears. Found it and now a set of good gears is waiting for me to get shipped :) .

In de meantime we soda blasted all the aluminium parts of the tranny and TC. All the metal parts have been cleaned and rattle-canned semi gloss black. When the gears get here we can put it all together.

We also removed the oil pan of the engine, replaced the rear crankshaft seal and the oil pan packing. The oil leaks should be over now. Found a new canister oil filter and changed that. Also painted the Canister. The clutch plate was worn. A new one is available oem so ordered that and fixed it.

Now we are working on restoring the drive shafts. Found out that a boot of the CV joint of a French car that fits the sliding piece of the drive shafts. Three of the four U joints could use new bearings so ordered 3 spider kits and put it in. The fourth was probably replaced before: that was the only greasable one. Now they all are. Have some nice pics of rebuilding the driveshafts but not here right now so will post that soon.

I have the parts shipped one of these days. So I put a wish list in the classifieds section with some other parts I'd need. Hope i can find some parts so I can take benefit of shipping parts together.

Some pics of the prop shaft restoration. The spider kits are Nipparts J2922006. The boot we used is a boot of the steering arm of a Peugeot 504/505. Spidan no. 83779. Not original but a nice fit.

Great work. Thank you for posting all of these parts references.

I noticed your "want ad." Specter Off Road had an early slide-up-window door last summer. Marv sold me a piece from it. I don't remember if it was the driver side or the passenger side door. But it might be worth inquiring to see if it has the handle parts you are looking for. It was sitting in a bin with a bunch of other doors. You might ask for Kurt. Other than Marv, I got the impression that Kurt is probably the most knowledgeable about what obscure parts are lying around but not necessarily listed in their computer inventory.

Just a thought.
