you forgot the Heckling Station of which I am Master of that domain. Just ask @jrob @Bodean and @fountainhead

I am definitely down for a group install of the AFI or to watch someone else do it first.

Dropped the 2F off this morning at Jackson Cylinder Head. It was pretty touch and go getting the engine out. It is much larger than I imagined and I was worried about the hoist being overloaded with the trans/tcase still attached. I ended up separating them. Getting the trans back in will be a job for sure. I left the AC connected. I just used a small strap to hold the compressor out of the way towards the front. With it far enough forward, the two rubber parts of the hoses allowed to the condenser to swing 90 degrees out of the way. Of course the hoses probably didn't like it but it's worth a shot.

Do you have at least a 2 Ton hoist? I agree, it was pretty sketchy. Probably still worth keeping it all connected going back in, though. The transmission/tcase is a pain going in from below.

You all would laugh. I used a 3/4 ton one from when I pulled a 4g63t eclipse engine back in the day. I think it's going on craigslist and I need a two ton one. After I'm done it's going on craigslist too. I use these so rarely it doesn't make sense to keep one around. Two notable things about the removal. One is that the ac compressor didn't have the long bottom bolt that goes all the way through. Not sure how it stayed tensioned. Second was the the cross shaped bracket the bolts the slave cylinder onto the bellhousing broke an ear off. I'm hoping it's not too oddball of a part to find. Otherwise things went pretty well. Many pictures and no less than thirty labeled baggies of bolts are waiting to go back together.

So I have spent ALOT of time in 200s lately and am, frankly, sick of them.

I've been dreaming about another cruiser and 4 doors is a must because of family. Having narrowed it down to a 100 or 60 for weekend camping and ruining more mud threads I am leaning towards a 62 as I've never owned one, they are my wife's favorite of the various styles, and well, they are old school and I'm sick of modern electronics and the issues that go with that when you add sand, bullets, and zero maintenance.

IF you wanted a weekend cruiser that was reliable to "See and Eat MS" in that was fairly stock (modest lift, maybe a winch bumper) would you go for one with a dead engine and do a swap (and ALL that it entails....through a shop, not me) or would you look for a well running one with the old 2F and peel out?

I am normally a purist but seeing as most 60 series are either high mileage or high cost museum pieces I am intrigued by the options of a new heart and simply shopping for a good body/interior that I won't wince at when muddy kids and dog hit the back bench.

Again I am purely dreaming here and have not even begun to wrap my head around this but ....what say you? what would you do? *Yes I realize it's not what you would do but what I am willing to do monetarily, etc. But I know a lot of you have had, sold, modded them and so I seek those opinions.

Cheers....

John, You know 100's , so no need to tell you how great they are, I'm with you on liking the simplicity and ease of working on and maintaining a older rig, I love my 60 but have never owned a 62 , nor do I care to . personally if you go with a 62 I'd try to find a good running well maintained one and call it good, unless you just want a big project to pour money into.

FJ60 = No gee wizzy windows and door locks, carbed 2F + manual 4 speed. Simplicity at it's finest.

FJ62 = Electric windows and locks (except with very early FJ62s), EFI 3FE + auto tranny.

FJ62 auto trannies are a know weak point and expensive to replace. Toyota has discontinued some of the EFI components such as EFI main relay, and other pieces I can't remember. Aftermarket is an option in replacing parts.

3FE is a good engine. I have one swapped into one of my FJ60s and it has been reliable for >> 200k miles but I have had to replace an FPR, EFI main relay, circuit opening relay. Because of the dropping of support for the 3FE by Toyota I would steer away from a FJ62.

My DD is FJ60 and I'm sticking with that until I or it dies.

FWIW, the Land Cruiser Museum in SLC still doesn't have a FJ-62 on display. They are looking to fill that gap with an unmolested specimen.

Don't listen to any of these fools. The FJ62 is the best vehicle in the history of the world.

Until you have to drop the fuel tank to replace the pump and forget and leave 5 gallons in the tank.

Show me the broken piece. Ill look in my stash
slave cyl.webp

It may actually be more Y shaped. It is the piece shown here bolted to the slave cylinder and then the bottom bolt goes to the bellhousing. There is a top bolt not seen in this angle. I searched and found this pic. i have to dig through the parts baggies to find the actual broken part. Thanks and it would be awesome if you had something like it laying around.

The round headlights sold me honestly. But look for a good clean running 60 or 62 and hope you don't have my experience of needing an engine rebuild a few months later. I almost went swap but honestly its an expensive long process that appears to have debatable resale value. I certainly haven't found many for sale that would recover the purchase and swap cost together.
