Just saw this thread and thought I'd add to it as when I was searching for 60 series flatbed pics before I did mine, I never could come up with much. I'm the owner of the 62 that Don (FC Fab) built. I just had Don build me an alternate bed that can be swapped out when I don't want to run the "camper" setup. I think it turned out pretty damn cool...far cry from many of the hack jobs found on the web...

hey bro, how was this done, was the rear end saved or was it literally just chopped in half and then all fabbed up?

im looking to make a land cruiser 79 ute forgery such as pic related and just want to learn as much as i can about the process.

I'm calling BS on this one. it's too short for a japanese boy to drive...looks cool, but don't work. why do you think all the other real pickys show about 10+ more inches than this one does post Bpillar? and why would you cut a 79 series? just trade it to someone with a ute who wants a wagon...my 2 sense
 
so go look at where your front seats backs are in relation to the B pillar...the pic shown would have the steering wheel in your rib cage- it's almost a foot too short to actually drive...

I trimmed the front fenders to give the whole thing a more balanced look. Unfortunately, I don't have any side shots. I'm really close to the next step, whatever that is.

I know nothing about paint and very little about bodywork. I'm thinking the next step is epoxy primer then some seam sealer? Then some paint? or maybe Monstaliner? Any tips are appreciated.

This whole project was about spending as little money as possible and using what I had. So far the only thing I've bought is welding gas, cutoff wheels, grinding wheels, and wire. All the metal came out of the body panels i removed.

The paint is going to end up costing a bit and i still need to figure out how I'm going to build the bed.
 
So the cab is FINALLY welded up. The welds look like s*** and the grinding/smoothing looks even worse, but it's done. Today I'm going to remove all the extra paint in the area that had work done and hopefully shoot a coat of epoxy primer over it. After that I can't decide how to finish it off. My initial thought was some silver monstaliner on the roof and down the back area covering the welds. I think normal paint would look a little rough over my "bodywork".

Any input is appreciated.

Does anyone know of a spring that I can pop in the factory hangars that will push my wheelbase back a little bit? I'm only interested in 3-4 inches - that way I think I can use an early fj60 driveshaft as they are a bit longer. What about using some late tacoma springs? I think I could flip my springs around, but I don't know how I feel about drilling a leaf spring.

The way it sits right now the axle might as well be welded to the frame the thing is so stiff. Once I get the bed on hopefully it will drop down a little, but I'm not optimistic. As you can see the shackle angle is a little, uh, ugly.
