Been moving along slowly. Fixing rust. Cleaning things. Figgerin' and re-figgerin' when the thing I figgered in the first place turned out all wrong.
Used the old corners to finish out the new cab and I plan to use a section of the rear floor for the lower back cab section. I will use a cut up rear hatch for the glass. One of these days I will have some pictures of decent progress.

Anyone done anything with all these evap lines in here? I'm debating removing them, and rigging up something simpler. There is a big metal loop that runs under the body as well which I'm guessing is some type of cooler. My fj40 had zero tank vents other than the cap, but it always smelled like gas. My other thought was to extend all the hoses and mount it up under the bed somewhere - this would probably be the more acceptable way of doing things.

The loop is to prevent leaking when you flip the car (not if but when...) ;)
I replaced it with rubber hose, the rest is all needed, if it is a Hj
EDIT: you have Fj, forget below

The air vent system goes from right to left and back into the frame, this way if the car is on its side fuel can not leak out, but very rusted line.
I replaced with rubber hose: 77256 TUBE, FUEL EMISSION, NO.3

HJ - I can't thank you enough for posting this all so thoroughly. I have a 12HT converted from a FJ60. All kinds of
lines have been left, and I had no clue as to what it what. This will help me clean it all up. And the roll over line on
mine is really rusty too. Thx! J
PS: expect a PM when I get home to get it sorted out, if you don't mind.

I mounted the evap stuff in the tool box, but a nice under bed box just for the evap would also be good. key is to keep it above the tank tho...

Ah, above the tank. Roger that. I'm going to have to build a frame to mount the tank separate from the flatbed. I think if I lengthen a couple of the evap hoses I will be able to mount the entire hose assembly above the center of the tank out of harms way.

Just saw this thread and thought I'd add to it as when I was searching for 60 series flatbed pics before I did mine, I never could come up with much. I'm the owner of the 62 that Don (FC Fab) built. I just had Don build me an alternate bed that can be swapped out when I don't want to run the "camper" setup. I think it turned out pretty damn cool...far cry from many of the hack jobs found on the web...

That truck is amazing man.

@dieselbigot That is incredibly awesome. Did you move the axle back at all? I'm wondering how the proportions are going to turn out with the bed and the "extended" cab. Do you have any straight on side shots of yours?

This thread died, but I have been working very slowly on the conversion. Nothing very exciting so I haven't been posting pictures, but it's coming along.

What's the build thread on this baby?

Tymanfj40 - The thread used to be over on Pirate. It was called Bretts fj31, but when I click the link now nothing comes up. Probably if you image search for "bretts fj31" you can get some of the pictures.

These pictures are from about a month ago, though not much has changed. I built a frame to hold the fuel tank and started patching body panels together. The rear side windows are flip out windows from an fj40. It's slow going because everything has to be pieced together, but I think it's going to turn out well.

So I sit here looking at this picture and I can't help but think how the rear axle needs to be moved back and the shackle angle addressed. I know the angle will get better with some weight on there, but it was not ideal when this thing was a full cab. I'm thinking 63" chevy springs mounted in the near stock location would do the trick. Anyone run the Chevy springs SUA? I'm not opposed to going SOA, but bolting the springs in and not having to go through an SOA conversion sure would be nice... With the flat bed I intend to build tire clearance won't be an issue and this thing is going to sit ass high as is.

Some more research suggests that a 63" chevy mounted near stock would give me 10 inches of wheelbase extension. That would look great, but then I would need to figure out shock mounting and gas tank clearance, etc. Maybe it's not worth it for a beater truck.

I have also thought about flipping the springs and drill the perches to add some length. I worry about drilling the military wrap leaf and weakening the spring.

Cut some arse off and shorten your tray, better departure angle and drive shafts ect get to stay factory length. Easier for any breakages finding stock parts to get u home again

I wholeheartedly agree on the breakages issue and keeping stock components.

I really don't want to lose any more bed length than is necessary, but it may come down to that. It would certainly be cheaper. And that is kind of the name of the game with this ole turd. I only have about $1800 in this thing so it would be tough to dish out $500 on a mod that will make it tougher to repair. I'm planning on chopping off about 6-8 inches anyway, so I'll see how it looks after that.

Great thread. :)

(Lots of ideas / inspiration while I contemplate whether to strip a rusted out rig or turn it into farm truck / wood hauler.)
