I love my 5.29s. There is no real concern about running on the highway. With a DOHC engine, it can handle higher RPMs just fine. I'd recommend getting a yellow box too, for correcting the speedometer. It will also help with trans shifting.

checked with the GPS last night. ~2100 RPM at 55MPH.

I'm running 5.29's with 35" Toyo MTs which are one of the biggest, heaviest 35's. I run about 2800 RPM's at 70mph. On long freeway drives I'd like to have 4.88's just for the lower RPM's. The 5.29's are great on hills, off road or anytime you are below 70mph.

I’m looking into new gears for my 97 LX450 running 35s. Anyone actually running 5.29s with 35s I’d like to hear any downside to the 5.29s that you’ve actually experienced. Every trail we run requires a couple of hours on the highway running about 75mph, but during the week it really doesn’t see much highway use.

Thanks,
Cook.

You won't be comfortable at 75mph. Off the top of my head you would be somewhere over 3k RPM.
I'm doing 5:29's with 35's because I tow often.
From what I understand 65MPH is it's happy place and 70MPH is it's happy passing place.

^^ Agreed. If you are rolling several hours you will be happiest at 65-70. It will pull 75 but not for a long run. We went on a ride last fall, about an hour on the interstate and it rode good, but I am a pokey joe so 65-70 was good with me.

On the hills and on the trails in low range, first gear it will pull the house down if you gave it a chance. For reference I am running a 91 3FE, 5.29s, 35" cooper STTs.

285's and 5.29's and at 50mph i think i'm at 2200rpm. in the rocks i wish it went slower but if i use the brakes it crawls pretty slow. i have arbs and solid pinion spacers. no issues in 40'000miles. i try not to let the wheels hop and they rarely do.

after reading that i realized just how slow ive been driving the last 4 years. makes me even more pissed about the speeding ticket i got last week. the cop radared the tacoma that was passing me which was a similar color. 56 in a 40. i was driving 42.

Not a hijack, but...

My recently purchased '96 came w/ 5.29. PO ran worn out 35's. I replaced w/ 33's for daily driving. Everything seems to be "good". Do I need to go to 4.88's or am I ok?

-Thanks

5.29's and 35's are the best combo IMO from 65 mph and below. My truck still slows way down on big freeway climbs, I can't imagine how slow it would be with 4.88's. The key question you have to ask yourself is if you are ok with a max speed of 70 mph cruising down the highway. If you want to go 75 -80 mph, you need 4.88's. The only time I wish I went 4.88's is when I am going on a wheeling trip with my buddies. They are friggn speed demons who want to do 80 mph on the highway and I just can't keep up with 5.29's.

Definately go 4.88's. I'll swap you my thirds so you can get started re-gearing them!

Well, 6 weeks ago I was asking questions about 5.29's and now I've got em. Love em. Big project, as most of you know that have done them; the $$$ really adds up as well. I was showing 65mph (GPS) at 2500 rpm and 68-ish at 2600. Best of all though, I got my crawl back :). Yellow Box next I think.

A few pics.

Crawl Speed/RPM

For reference, can some of you post up what your tire size, diff ratio and speed/RPM is in low range? I am attempting to determine crawl speeds/RPM for various diff ratios.
Also include if the number is O/D on in highest trans gear. Thanks, Terry
