460 on 35's

Another good option is 285/75r17 which is a 34x

For a fact, just had the BFG M/T's 285/75R17's and with a BMC and lift, I had full lock-to-lock, and full compression at all 4 corners. They fit great!
The 315's (35") have now do rub just a wee bit and that's after tearing out the wheel well liners and pounding the pinch weld. Over the holidays I'm going to look into that a little more and see where it's rubbing and see if I can address it.

What is the reason for you to change from 285/75/R17 to 315/70/17? GX is not my daily ride, I have a company vehicle for that. But, I use it for long-distance road trips and occasionally camping on the weekend. I do plan to go on trails but not rock crawling..

It is also my daily driver. I just mounted the 315's last month. The ONLY reason for going with the 315's was because I could NOT find 285/75R17 BFG's ANYWHERE in the U.S.!
I waited and looked over several months and there just are not any tires that size and make available. I looked at smaller sizes but the next available size down were several sizes smaller, just too small, so I just upped it a size (or two). I was kind of forced into it. I'd truly prefer the 285/75R17's and will go back to that size at some time.
I'm a hardcore BFG fan and only wanted that size as an all-terrain from BFG.

They make 5.29s for our GXs!!!?

And you ran those with 34s!!!?
That was what was suggested from Eric at YotaMasters. They specialize in all things off road for Toyota's, e.g. overland, crawling, pre-runner, etc.
Truthfully, never have had an issue with power assending any grades or climbs with that gearing. No hunting for gears or dropping out of cruise control. It's been fine!

What is the general highway mileage with 35s with no regear? Trying to figure that out since the car is a dd and doing overlabd trips, gas mileage was one of the main reasons I got a gx460 over an older lx570

Has to be terrible. I'm running 33x12.5s w/ a 2.5 Dobinsons IMS lift and get about 12.5-13mpg on the interstate. I do have a drawer system w/ gear, roof rack and Alu Cab up top so that doesn't help. While I can tell a slight difference in power it's not bad and still shifts smooth. I want to go to 35s but can already tell I'm on the threshold of driving like s*** without re gearing so I'm waiting until I do it all at once before moving up.

With a throttle controller it’s not bad at all. I just drove two hours on the highway with all kinds of hills and had no issues passing or keeping up. Now once I regear it’s going to be better for sure. And I still manage to get 13+ mpg city/hwy mix.

What exactly do the throttle controllers do? Is just a difference in throttle response? If it'll help with my mpg's then I'm game to try it out.

There are different settings. Eco, OEM, City, Sport, and Sport+. I have mine in City Mode and absolutely love the throttle response. Feels like I'm back on 33s.

I go back and forth whether going to 35s is worth the extra headaches haha. But I do think it looks much better and like how tall it sits. Plus once I'm regeared, 3" coilovers and 1" body lift get installed, this GX will be unstoppable :steer:

I agree with you about looking great. For overlanding and long distance travel, I feel like mpg is pretty important. I have been able to do pretty difficult trails here in Colorado on 31.6 inch Falken AT3 tires and no lift. I feel like 33s is the sweet spot and will jump to that once I get a lift unless I want to start rock crawling.

What route are you going with regearing and do you know a ballpark on what to expect?

100% agreed. For fully overlanding mpg is very important and if mines was used for long distance travels Id stick with 33-34s. Who knows, I might go down to 34s haha

34-35s are cool n all, but have to go under the car and chop a lot of s***. Oh, and spare tire? I just throw it in the back lol

I did encounter articulation problem fully stuft one time, but changing approach remedies it.

We decided to drive from Bend to Salem through hwy 20 instead of hwy 26 through Mt Hood. Then jumped onto i5 the remainder of the drive. I just filled up and managed to get 16.4 mpg with the 35s and stock gears. Very impressive. I’m sure I could have pushed and got 18+ but ended up hauling ass (70+ mph) on i5 to get the kids home. 8 hour drive was no bueno 😴

Pretty impressive! Is that what the car said or mpg computed with the new tire diameter?

It's people like you causing me to spend all my money... I may make the jump soon! Even if I am at 13ish already with 33s.
