Trying to make decision on cage.

Was thinking about using the metal tech front profile cage that can
be tied in to the existing cage. I would then add a little to the C pillar
to beef it up and allow shoulder harness installation for rear seat belts.

I also want to be able to run a bikini top all the way back to protect the
kiddos from the sun.

Take 40 to Chris at ORS.

Tell him what you want.

Leave for a week or so.

Come back, pay up, roll out.

That would be my plan... unless you really want the exact same cage that every other 40 has. Not knocking Metal-Tech or their cage, but you have a great resource that can build you something, give you exactly what you want, does great work, and will be a reasonable price. If you're gonna do it, just bite the bullet and do it all the way.

My two pennies... :meh:

If you want a kit and want to weld it and fit it yourself then Metal tech cages are great.

If you don't, then what Jordan suggested is the way to go. but if you are having something personalized make the design your own. I am not talking about a crazy lookin cage just something that distinguishes yours from the rest.

Chris can not guaranty pad clearance or that the doors will close, so I thought the prefab front MT might tie into the stock cage and add a little to the back.
I find that hard to believe based on the work he's done. But, if that's the case, then you may be right about doing a MT kit. I would do a full cage instead of tying into the factory cage. It's not much more but should be much stronger and greater protection.

You can screw up the clearance on the MT cage if you find fit it with the doors on. Just sayin'...

Thanks guys. Yes fit the cage with the doors on so you can make sure you can close doors as well as roll the window down.

Gonna be changing the oil and filter today...have a M1 filter, but what weight oil do you guys recommend using?

10w 30 is what I would assume?

Not in a 2F. Shell Rotella 15W40 or Mobil Delvac 15W40 or Chevron Delo 15W40 or Valvoline Premium Blue 15W40. All are diesel oils with high ZDDP (zinc) content, which you need for older engines with flat tappet cams. Numerous threads on this topic in 40 tech.

Wow that's a lot of info! Thanks for the heads up, but a ran a couple quick searches (from my phone) and got lots of hits with a million options. Went with 10w30 for now...all i need it to get me through is the test crank, initial run. When it comes time to actually drive it, I'll change it out for one of the above.

Using 10W30 for a test crank should be fine. FWIW, see below wisdom from Cruiser guru Jim C, from a thread concerning cam wear:

".... all oil with the most current ratings is pretty much bad for old engines.

Look for oil that is NOT rated for the newest spark or diesel engines...there are still diesel oils sold that are not for use in emission controlled diesel engines. That is the good stuff.

Here is an example from Chevron:
"Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 (API CI-4 PLUS)

Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 is a premium quality engine oil designed for pre-2007 engines and higher sulfur fuels (> 500 ppm sulfur). With exceptional soot dispersancy and wear control, Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 protects cylinders, pistons, rings, and injectors against wear and corrosion, providing optimum service life and minimal maintenance."

I'm sure those Lybians that drive those 30 year old 40's into combat heed this advise

I'd guess they probably pump raw crude oil directly from their well heads into the crankcases.

Oh, you said Lybians..you mean like Rosie O'Donnell? LOL.

I thought she was Lebanese??

Who sells the unicorn dust? I think I need some.

 don't we all

oh, and I once got a 45 minute motor oil speech from a very respected MUD guru - 20W50 in 2F's it is ;p particularly if you are living in hotter climates
