Took the truck for a couple spins around the block and WTF?! It's overheating!!

Just before I parked it I changed the water pump but it leaked. So when I had the truck apart I pulled it off and made a new gasket and sealed it. Perfect, no leaks.

So why is it overheating?!
- Did the rad or passages get blocked with dirt? - No, checked the rad and blew some air through it and some passages.
- The thermostat screwed? - took it out and tested it. It's perfect
- Did I block the hoses when I had the truck parked and forgot to take the rag out? - No. Pulled all of the hoses, then the rad, leaving only the water pump.
- Maybe the shaft on the water pump broke and the impeller wasn't spinning?

Took off the pump and this is what I found.

In case you can't tell what happened from that pic, here is the fix. Dumb*ss!!

Haha! You sure I did not install that part? That is something I would do! :whoops:

Just got back from a month of vacation. Was excited about working on the truck again.

Finally got the truck on the road. I had some treated wood in the back for some fence work so I decided to build a temporary wood deck for the back so I could start drivin' it. I'll build the steel deck later.

Here it is on the trail. I also pulled the winch cable out to try the PTO.

Here it is stuffed. The fronts stuff the fenders. The rears don't quite hit the cab. I guess some high clearance fenders will have to be in the works.

Experimenting with the articulation of my truck again. This time at the garage.

For the front, for now, I lowered the bump stops to prevent the tires from ramming into my fenders. Haven't decided if I'm going to build some high clearance fenders or not. I love the stock shape fenders and signals, so maybe it'll stay the way it is.

This photo shows the small amount of trimming I am going to do (I hate to do it, but it will probably make them look a little more like steel fenders anyway)
complete5-2.webp

And here is a pic showing the clearance inside the fender at the front where the signals are mounted. This is why I used multiple fenders for extending the bump stops. I can easily adjust by 1/16" at a time.

From the back this is all of the travel I can get with this set up.
complete8.webp

The down travel is limited by the shocks. I can jump in the back of the truck like this and the only additional movement I get is the compressed spring compressing another 1/8" or so.
Here is the shackle at full droop.
complete9.webp

I don't want to do anything with this until I get some longer springs to move the axle even further back. More droop will mean the other side will go up even further, hitting the cab
complete10.webp

I still think I 'll look into 45 rear springs. They should move the axle back another 2.5-3 inches which would be perfect.

Anyone know (I can't remember), are the 45 rear springs wider than 40 springs? Does anyone have any that can take some measurements for me? I'm looking for spring length, eye to eye length, and arc height (lay the spring on the ground upside down and measure from the ground to the spring)????

Those are burned in quite well. I figure the amount of weld I have on there (all the way around the hanger) is WAY stronger than the factory bit of welding and 2 rivets.

I have thought of putting small gussets on the sides and/or ends to help with the side forces, but it seems too overkill

Thanks for the input!

gussets for the rear spring hangers won't be overkill - don't ask me how I know

and I am not the only one here who had them break

Im so glad the snow is all gone here.. I dont think I can handle anymore. But does look like fun for you.

End is near

I forgot to post this up a while ago. I ran the truck for a while after I finally finished it. Suspension worked great, drivetrain was tight, and the PTO winch was freakin' awesome.

Here's a pic of it down in Edmonton just before the Alberta Safari Park multi club run

And here it is parked with my Dad's JD and my son's JD

Here it is after a day in the mud at the park (which is only 10min from my Dad's place). I posted a couple of vids on youtube as well under baffj44

Then is was all over. At the beginning of this thread I mentioned that I was building this truck to drive while I was working on the next truck. The next truck was going to be stretched body/frame with mog axles.

Well, decided I don't have the time right now to start from scratch so we decided to buy a built truck and work on it. I still want to work and fab stuff, but needed something to start with.

Here's a pic of the last day of my fj40/45 mutt and the first day of the mog'd 45. I'll start a thread on the work I've got going on the 45. I've done nothing to it yet, but am dangerously close :p

Anyone ever see it before?;) Thanks Robb:cheers:
