Mine does about 590 in drive, I think park is about 700 warmed up. :meh:

I want to say in park it does, drive is maybe 700 to 800.

I read here somewhere the idle should work it's way to 650 if in park, drive, AC off or on. Maybe that was false information. Idk I am a land cruiser newb.

I think that's correct (at least with the AC off). The ECU will be targeting that speed, as long as that TPS shows you are off the throttle.

Raleigh NC here! Checking in, finally got my first and only LC! '91, after a two year on and off search found it local. Drove past first time, but not the second. Drove it right to my mechanic. Full brake overhaul, including E brake. Rusted out rear rt swaybar bracket, fab'ing a new one.

For those still reading, she has got..... 126k original miles! After some research we think someone stashed her in a garage for 15 years or so yrs. Very little rust, very little problems.... So far! More or less stock, new shocks light bar and 33s. Looking for a few good local LC owners to learn from and wheel with.

What a nice clean 91! Looks like mine.

Been looking online for the answer, but to no avail! What are the best off-roading episodes and specials on top gear/ grand tour. So far I have only found the Bolivia special which highlighted the worst fj40 ever. Thoughts?

Looks good... very nice find... I got my first 80 two weekends ago... White 1991 poverty package with some really nice extras. My first LC was my 74 FJ40

Have you found a club yet? If not you should take a look at Old North State Cruisers (no title) Nice group and we have a number of members up in the Raleigh area. Couple of them run down to our dinner meetings that we have the first Tuesday of every month ...speaking of which... might be too late to swing by but were meeting at Pollo Pizza Pasta on 68 in Greensboro this evening at 6 - 6:30.

Were also listed under Clubhouses on here too...

Well glad that another 80 got saved!!!

Here is mine...

Love the rig! Old North State looks a little expensive for me, with a wife and kid on a poor pilot's salary, think I saw $550/yr. Would love to get to know you guys though. Thank you for the invite.

Everyone on here that has the rare and ultimate 3FE equipped 80 post here, and don't forget to mention any 3FE specific junk you've done!

Hopefully this will make it easier to find other 3FE owners to ask for help, etc. when that rare problem arises!

RE-Edit: aw hell, chat away, just give me enough info to compile it to a "database" type arrangement so that I can make a thread with everyone who has done what and who just owns the beastiest 80's

Vehicle: 1991 and 1992 FJ80's

Location: South Central North Carolina (Right near Uwharrie Nat'l Forrest)

3FE Junk: 1) Custom 2.5" Exhaust (pics to come)
2) De-smog (in progress, write-up to come)

3FE Issues: Coolant Loss (plastic tank crack, suspected rear heater and engine bay by-pass hoses)
Since you said to chat away...

Seen a lot about proper engine bay cleaning and I'm pretty much just confused. Had both of my mechanics today tell me opposite ways of doing it. So, any 3fe specific gotcha's to watch out for? Low or high pressure? Cover cap and battery, anything else? Best think to spray in there to loosen the hardened mud? Running or not during soaking and rinsing stages?

I owned a 1991 with locking hubs and No Clunk.
I have only 126, and I got a pretty good clunk. So after reviewing all the advice, should I start with replacing hubs for locking ones. If that doesn't work then flanges then birfs? Seems if I do birfs I should just have them rebuild the front axle. Any reason I should use anything other than OEM? I will pick my boy up from school, go out on the trail and sink it up to the axles in mud, come out, rinse and then go take the wife on a date. Can not afford to replace birfs three times over. Thoughts?

I have 1992's. One clunks like a MOFO. The other much less. I wonder if anyone has had thier services and if that would change anything. My smoother tranny has 170 on it. The other I think somewhere near 230. As part of the merger of the two trucks I'll get my good one serviced and see if there's any improvement.

Not sure where the $550/yr came from Whitefox, but this is the dues for ONSC:

ONSC Membership (annual) - $40
ONSC 10 Year Membership - $300 (25% discount from annual, given 10 years of membership)
ONSC Lifetime Membership - $500 (50% discount from annual, given 25 years of membership)

10% discount will be applied, upon request, to any membership level for US Armed Services members active OR retired (at time of purchase or renewal).

If a student wishes to join ONSC, the BOD will, if they see fit, appoint said person as an Honorary Member (in accordance with the bylaws), wherein the student can participate in all membership-required and non-membership-required activities related to ONSC without paying dues, for a duration of one year.

Check us out Whitefox, one of the best clubs I've ever been associated with!

Sorry for the hijack, now back to 3FE porn...

Had my 91 for a few months now. This is my second LC, went without for about 5 years. This one is a daily driver. Add-ons include a 3" lift, an ARB bumper with a 12k Warn winch. All we're on it when purchased it thank goodness. Probably wouldn't have ever shelled out the $ having kids and a money pit house. Cats had been deleted at some point but just put new ones back on the other day due to the toxic odor. Brittle plastic and some tattered seats on the inside but the dash isn't cracked :). It has the common window and door lock problems but it's nothing that can't be fixed over time. The body is straight with no rust to mention. My kids and I love the truck but my wife still needs some convincing :princess:.

no no ... if that was true i wouldn't be in the club... that is, if im not mistaken for a life time membership.... I think i paid $45 for the year... we have three groups one up in the Raleigh area, one here in the triad and one down in Charlotte.... we have some bleed over from one group to another but we usually see each other at our major events... Logan's Run is our major club event.. down in Uwharrie national forest...

If you have any other question please let me know... Keep up the great work... awesome looking rig! Mine will get there but I have only had it for a couple months....

Hey Everyone!
Just checking in with the coolest guys and gals ever...3FE Owners!

Here is my quick story:
Always been a "car guy" and have owned a few old school American Land Yachts and a few older mercedes and to be honest never considered a Japanese car. I started reading more and more about the origins of Toyota and The Toyota Way and really became impressed with the quality. I wanted a reliable SUV/Truck and as I'm in my 20s didn't want to have the crazy repair bills of a 1990s benz anymore.

I found my dark grey metallic FJ80 on craigslist for 1,500. Drove out there and drove her home with 333,000 miles with no issue. Put about 500 miles on the old truck and then I had my first issue, the truck stalled out.

Now for most of my life my Grandfather (now in his 80s) was the one who worked on all of the cars and is a truly gifted engineer/mechanic but I am for from his level of skill.

However I bought my FJ with the intention of doing as much of the work on it myself for several reasons and thanks to to his form replaced the fusible links, spark plug wires, spark plugs, dizzy cap, dizzy rotor and got the old truck running and on the road again.

I have been thinking of what to do next and as my tags are from 2015 I need to get my 3FE to pass smog.

What I plan on doing this weekend is installing the VC120 charcoal canister (along with the associated hoses) as mine is most likely original and for 50 bucks its a why not even for this 20 something year old (yes I know there are FSM tests to check but rather replace with new).
My Fj doesn't have a huge back pressure at the tank but does have a emissions smell to it which could be several things but mine as well start here.

Anywho I will replace the charcoal canister this weekend and I also want to replace the 2 o2 sensors this weekend as well. I searched the form but wasn't able to track down a write up on how to replace them on a 3fe and wanted to see if any of you guys have and if so could you please reply with their location and the procedure to do so Id really appreciate it. Also Toyota Parts Deal says their NLA are aftermarket o2 sensors worthy of our tractor engine?

In a few weeks I will replace the cats ( I know they're under the drivers seat area) but do they just unbolt (plug and play) or should I have an exhaust shop do it. Best place to get OEM esque cats?

Just trying to pass the strict Ca smog check is a pain as the egr assembly is NLA OEM will have to go aftermarket with that too then should be good to go.

Thanks for any replies!

Do I need TLCA membership before I join?

Found a few more things wrong....
1st, can't figure out if this is power steering fluid or oil, it is definitely in the right place to be power steering fluid but looks and feels like oil. Second, found rust where I think one of the front drain lines has been leaking into the cab and forming this wonderful rust under my feet. Lastly, when I fill it up ALL the way it starts to come out, and alot! But if I only fill it 3/4 then no problem, and no leaking during regular fill ups. Thoughts!?? The 3FE though is holding strong, no problems there! Oh and just today the voltmeter spiked to 16v, would wiggle and fluctuate at idle, and spike on acceleration, grrrrr

For oil leaks, clean everything up with degreaser and a power washer then try to identify where the leak is originating. It's pretty hard to identify leaks when everything is caked with old oil and dirt.

That's a very common area for rust in 80s. Check out my build thread for my '92. I have very similar photos to yours. Mine appeared to be a combination of a windshield seal leak and a sunroof drain leak.

Pretty sure my cat just broke loose. Rattles when I close the door. Definitely not plug and play unless you are a certified welder. Could be wrong but everything I have read people to lots of custom exhaust work.

I will br replacing the cat with a high flow, swapping in a oversized glasspack and running all new 2.5 inch pipes from the header back. Should work and sound a whole lot better. Good look eith CA, that is a tough plus to keep an old truck running!
