I bought my 1st LC about 9 months ago. 1991 FJ80 with 150K on the odometer with a broken speedo cable. The owner told me to add 11K to that as he tracked it with an app on his phone. I replaced the cable and it now reads 175K. After the speedo cable, breaks and tires all the way around, drive shaft bolts (and re-tune), and a pinion seal I'm ready to call her a DD. Still needs lots of work, though.

Congrats! You'll always be working on it. But that's needs to be part of the fun!

@Josey1972 I am having fun with it. I just wish I knew more about FJ80s so that I could do the work myself. I'm glad I found this community.
Make sure you get a service manual and then read this forum. Figure out all your baslining. Then put a list together of the mods you want to do with prices. Put a plan together of that process. In the meantime do the small things you can afford. Add lights or spray the undercarriage or whatever. It's a journey. Enjoy it. The small repairs will help you gain confidence to take on larger ones. Good luck.

Everyone on here that has the rare and ultimate 3FE equipped 80 post here, and don't forget to mention any 3FE specific junk you've done!

Hopefully this will make it easier to find other 3FE owners to ask for help, etc. when that rare problem arises!

RE-Edit: aw hell, chat away, just give me enough info to compile it to a "database" type arrangement so that I can make a thread with everyone who has done what and who just owns the beastiest 80's

Vehicle: 1991 and 1992 FJ80's

Location: South Central North Carolina (Right near Uwharrie Nat'l Forrest)

3FE Junk: 1) Custom 2.5" Exhaust (pics to come)
2) De-smog (in progress, write-up to come)

3FE Issues: Coolant Loss (plastic tank crack, suspected rear heater and engine bay by-pass hoses)

Raleigh NC here! Checking in, finally got my first and only LC! '91, after a two year on and off search found it local. Drove past first time, but not the second. Drove it right to my mechanic. Full brake overhaul, including E brake. Rusted out rear rt swaybar bracket, fab'ing a new one.

For those still reading, she has got..... 126k original miles! After some research we think someone stashed her in a garage for 15 years or so yrs. Very little rust, very little problems.... So far! More or less stock, new shocks light bar and 33s. Looking for a few good local LC owners to learn from and wheel with.

Nice find TheWhiteFox? Looks Clean
Thanks man! Can not believe I found it local! Right now sitting at the tint shop, guy cannot get the rear sliding glass piece to come out in order to fully tint it. So if I slide the glass it will eventually start to peel back the tint film because there are debris in the seal he cannot get out, grrrr. Thoughts?

Just flipped 100 around town on it and I have the clunk!! Worst when dropping into R and D. But you guys are saying it is OK, I think that is what I read in previous pages.

Also chasing the coolant leak!

Looks good... very nice find... I got my first 80 two weekends ago... White 1991 poverty package with some really nice extras. My first LC was my 74 FJ40

Have you found a club yet? If not you should take a look at Old North State Cruisers (no title) Nice group and we have a number of members up in the Raleigh area. Couple of them run down to our dinner meetings that we have the first Tuesday of every month ...speaking of which... might be too late to swing by but were meeting at Pollo Pizza Pasta on 68 in Greensboro this evening at 6 - 6:30.

Were also listed under Clubhouses on here too...

Well glad that another 80 got saved!!!

Here is mine...

So, my list of mods include adding lockers, more Lift, a rebuilt or reman engine and 35's. Over time kind of list right? As money allows right? Well, this darling came up for sale.... some would recognize this as MrMoose truck. Man, I have some major project planning ahead of me. It's a great truck and as you can see has proven itself on many tough trails.

Vehicle name: Lagertha
Location: San Diego
Year: 1991
Color: white and black
Miles: 196k

I am the third owner. I rescued her from people who had no idea what she was. You can see where the CSULA Mom sticker stained in the tint on the back window. When I found her, the tires were shot, the passenger side cv joint was going out, the air filter gasket was missing, the passenger side corner running light kept falling out, the shocks were shot, the rotors where warped, and completely stock.

I have replaced the tires with 32" fulkens A/T. Replaced the cv joints, bearings, and seals. Added a snorkel, removed the fender flares and repainted from the fenders down with truck bed liner, painted the rims with truck bed liner, replaced the front corner running lights and turn signal indicators with crystal lense. Replaced all the vacuum lines, in red. Replaced the rubber air intake boots. Replaced the air filter gasket. New larger exhaust pipes from the cats back, and a flow master muffler. Oh yeah and the fan had was missing a blade so I replaced it as well, the vibrations made it feel like it had a blown motor. The progression was documented with pictures. Shown below.

The last problem I have not been able to fix is the damn RPM's at idle. I have adjusted it to the best happy medium with the idle screw but I am still not happy with it. When fully warmed up and in drive the idle is with 50 rpms from 650. The problem is when it's in park the rpm's jump up to around 950, when the AC pump kicks in it jumps to just over 1000 rpms. I did the basic check on the idle air control valve, and it's moving. I plan to replace the O2 sensors next. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Clean rig!

The ECU is adamant about controlling the idle, that little screw does nothing in the long term. Check your TPS to make sure you are signalling to the ECU the throttle is all the way closed. Also check for vacuum leaks and incorrectly routed lines.

I replaced all the vacuum lines thinking I had a leak, well actually I ran out of new vacuum lines so I have about 5 left todo. I did them one at a time so if any are incorrectly routed it was done the previous owner. Checking the TPS... I am new to forums in general and pretty bad at navigating them thus far. I will see if I can find something here on how to check the TPS. Thanks for the info.

Use Google. Google can search the depth of these forums faster. If Google doesn't find it then more hunting required from you.

Definitely. I searched "3fe tps test site:ih8mud.com" and this was the first result.

Had my FJ80 now for 3 weeks and just now got it to the point my wife could drive it! Brakes all the way around, too many issues to list, had to deflate these M/Ts that the idiot had over inflated by 15psi! Had to then go thru front and now rear rebalancing effort so it doesn't shake you off the highway above 60. And been chasing down the roof leak with some bathroom caulk (w/silicone) I had leftover (previous owner, idiot, put light bar across the top without anythingto seals the holes!!).

If the drain lines from the sunroof get stopped up, where does it usually start to leak. My only leak left comes in from around the top of the OS handle for the driver. Seems to be hitting the headliner and rolling down and stopping at the top of the handle. Any thoughts?

So I was cruising around the forums, pun intended. I came across a suggestion on another test for the air idle control valve. The suggestion was to pinch the vacuum line leading to it. This did lower my rpms, in park. It's a 425 dollar part, I don't want to replace it if it's not the problem. Any thoughts?

The FSM test for the IAC valve is to listen for it to click when you shut the engine off. Open the hood and reach in the window and turn the engine off. You should hear a "click click click" from the IAC.

I don't think they are known to fail.

Not smart enough to answer but just checked my 91 and it is idling at 950 as well in park.
