Ha! 5 miles from the house and the rear CV grenaded with very little warning

Limped it home on the front shaft after pulling the rear out. Yeah, we finished! :)

Here's a pic of the disassembled shaft. Broken bearing cups, roasted u-joints

Wow. Good thing you were almost home. Awesome trip report!

Short video from our wheeling in Moab, I believe this was on "Fins 'N Things".

Enjoyed following allowing with you guys on the trip.
If you were going to have a breakdown....what better part and place than a u-joint 5 miles away.
Great story to tell too!
No kidding! I looked at the joint and thought "this is too easy! I'm only 5 miles from my house!" from the look of the u-joint trunnions, this has been going on for some time. It's quite possibly the source of the vibration we experienced nearly the whole trip. I really can't believe it didn't make more complaint before it finally let go, BIG TIME. I called Tom Woods Driveshafts today but it's likely they won't cover this, oh well, I'm home:D

Last video from Hells Revenge, I miss UT

Quite a day :) we set out this morning to do some hiking but ended up meeting a bunch of new friends and wheeling all day. You can't beat that :)

Tom, John, Phil, Justin and Bobbi, thanks for letting us tag along with you today, it was a blast. How often can you strike up a conversation with total strangers on the roadside then spend the day with them? 4 wheelers are special folks.

We ran Fins and Things then broke for lunch. After several days of rain, the weather was perfect. View attachment 940494

Hells Revenge is rated a 6/10 trail by the TLCA group which hosts Cruise Moab. Still having roughly 2400 miles left in our trip, I didn't want to push it much harder than that. Body damage I can live with but big mechanical breakage leaves you stranded and ruins your trip.

Hells Revenge was a ton of fun and it was great to run the trail with other folks. Two close calls for me on the same uphill obstacle the first being a phantom loss of the brake booster which was hissing like crazy. After sliding downhill (and barely stopping) it came back to life. I have no idea what caused this. The second attempt resulted in a 3 wheeled balancing act and the feeling that the FJ was about to go over backwards on its roof. You can't win them all ;)

It's a Toyota, they only fail in the driveway or close to it!

Cool adventure. Thanks for sharing!

Just an FYI . I have had good luck with Carolina Driveshafts. They are less expensive and just as strong.

Thanks for that, I checked out their website and it looks like they can do just about anything.

Tom Woods is going to give $50 off the repair cost on this one so I'm sticking with them for the time being. I'll definitely keep the other in mind though, thanks again.

Thanks so much for this thread... we take a month every year for a road trip... it really makes a memory mark for the year... the NorthWest is our favorite.
One year we towed a 1988 Uhaul 13' trailer (made from the Burro molds) up through Glacier to Banff, Lake Louise, & Jasper... then camped in Idaho and Dillon CO on the way home. I really enjoyed reading and the photos. Glad the rig held together too.

Dang! a month every year? I'd be exhausted  Actually, I envy you; we wish we were still on the road. We did decide that there's some mighty fine things to be seen/camping to be had right around here in the PacNorthwest. Glacier NP is on our list as a place to go back to and actually hike/enjoy.

I got a call from Tom Woods today regarding the driveshaft which I sent back to them. After inspecting it, I was told that no part of it was actually re-buildable and a new shaft is $350! To Tom Woods credit, he takes great care of his customers and he gave me 50% off the cost of a new shaft and a bunch of spare parts, thanks Tom Woods :clap:The new shaft should be here shortly......

Love my wife dearly but it's like pullin teeth just to get her to ride in the 40 to the grocery store with me... Enjoyed following your "Odyssey' - appreciate you sharing!

Thanks, I'm beginning to get the bug to do something similar again...
