I doubt I would ever bust a set of 4.88's in my usage. Gear swaps can have other complications, such as increased gear noise. It's one of those things that if you can leave it alone, it's worth leaving alone. I'd just so much rather have Toyota 4.10 gears than Yukon 4.88's.

Nay

From what I have heard from the 60 series community running 3:1 t-case gears is they hum like no other, much worse than any re-geared diff...

I don't want to say much about the project at this point other than it will be a bolt in replacement system. It will not be an inexpensive tcase gear swap though. Christo and/or I will keep you guys informed as the project progresses. The plan was to have a production unit ready for Moab installed in one of our trucks.

the Marks adapter gears with your standard 4.1 diffs give you about 25% reduction, the rockhopper ones are a 45% reduction (but are $200AUS dearer)

Are the rockhopper gears available for an HF2A? Do you know of a website over there that sells them, by any chance? Thanks.

I'm thinking about being the HF2AV guinea pig...

yeah, but I'd rather hum only in low range than all the time. Would they hum when you're not in low range, since the low range isn't engaged? or does it not quite work like that?

The Marks Adapter re-gear is a low-range idler gear and a low-range output gear. Low-range gears (incl. stock) whine because they're straight-cut (vice helical like the high-range gears). High-range shouldn't be affected. Personally, I don't think add'l whine in low-range would bother me.

I'm thinking about a set of these for my FJ62. The feedback I've gotten from other split case owners is that they whine in high range as well (worse at highway speeds). Not sure if this applies to the gears for the 80s but Marks recently redesigned the split case gears and I asked them how much it reduced the noise:

Since the gears have gone into re-design we have noticed that noise has reduced some what.
In the old gears the was a two piece gear which we then welded together to form a one piece gear.
With the new gears we have now got a tool which means we no longer have to weld the gears.
That will prevent a lot of the noise.
I must add that in some transfer case's these gears have been noisier than others.

I hope this information helps in some way.

It just doesnt whine in low range from what I understand. It whines at high speeds becuase it also replaces the high speed gear. You might want to check on that...But most people complain about it.

I think the hummmmmm of the tires will cover most noises from the t-case :).

I would sincerely doubt that they would go to a straight cut high gear in the t-case to add a lower gear. Doesn't make much sense.

I'm surprised they didn't answer your email. I had two exchanges with him (one about the gear noise and one about the crawler box for split cases) and the reply time was within a couple of days if I remember correctly...

I emailed them too and received this response from Aaron today:

Hello Jason,

Thanks for the Email.

The Gearmaster transfer case gears will suit the HF2AV transfer case as well as the HF2A.
The only difference of the two is that the HF2AV has a viscous centre.

I hope this information helps in some way.

Sweeeeet! I'm still going to investigate the rockhopper ones, though, as I'd gladly pay another 150 USD for the higher reduction (45%).

Well there ya go.

Somebody do it up.

There is little worse as a side effect of a modification than a good gear whine out on the highway. I've dealt with this before in a diff regear, and it is pretty much hell in a daily driver. The 80 is a quiet rig - I doubt many on this forum would find it tolerable.

Amusingly, avoiding a diff regear for the very reasons of the potential of gear whine was a major factor in my interest in this mod. If a 25% reduction in the case is going to make noise, I'll just do 5.29's in the diffs and put a little boost under my arse while in high range, too.

Maybe others disagree, but for me a major chance of significant gear whine in high range is completely unacceptable. Now just a low range whine is fine given we have that already in stock form and I don't drive at any speed for any distance in low range.

I can hear the pinions snapping already.

On my FJ40s the main purpose of the after market stereo was to drown out the noises that the Cruiser made.
If these gears are loud, just turn up the volume. Besides, anyone lowering the t-case gears on an 80, probably already has tires that make a lot of noise. For them (me), the days of the quiet Cruiser are long gone.

Let's hear some music.

I have Marks low gear set in my Cruiser .. noisy yes .. important to me .. No ..

Fact I actually ( with Hi and Low reduction ) thought is price vs benefit is the most awesome inversion that I did in my Cruiser ..

Side note .. : in spite of i still enjoy mu turbo sound :D
