quick quiestion, what's a t04? the turbo? I'm turbo tarded.

Yeah, T04 is a turbocharger series. There are different "flavors" of T04 -- T04b, T04e, different aspect ratios and trims, etc.

I have the T04 35's and the 4.10 rear gears. I dont want to go any lower in high range. :)
I just need a way to cary more gas

It depends .. more power it's pretty nice, but more power dosen't means more control in down hills or hill climbs ..

For control you musnt need lower ratio .. ( but if you have both .. nice ! )

any up dates

update on which?

As I understand it the lower t-case gears are available from Marks.(Christo used them in the "Blueberry" his solid axle 100 series)

I am not sure the exact status of the Orion adapter. I don't think Slee is planning to pursue it further but perhaps Advanced Adaptors is still planning to make them.

There is a gear set available from rock hopper gears in AU they are lower than the marks set. I have just got done talking to them about a group buy and i'm going to start a new thread about it.

Someone needs to edit the title of this thread- every time I see it I get all excited, until I see the name of the original poster... :D

probably like the slee crawler box. the marlin would be between the tranny and transfer case.
There's no room for a case between the tranny and TC. You got floor and gas tank issues.

Bumped, and best of luck second time around! Christo, are you ready to fess up yet? Do I understand your reference to Marlin in the other more recent thread means you are running a direct swap 4.00 or 4.70 low range? From what I remember reading on the HF2A/V transfer case gears, this isn't a custom part swap, like it's using the Marlin existing stock? BTW, I was told by someone that did a TcFD swap, the HF2AV uses the same gears as the HF2A, confirming Dan's P/N interchange reference earlier in this thread (post #14).

You serious rock crawler dudes ought to be looking hard at that price. I bet Dan can't get you a set of stock gears for that money!

Price and what Dan can get stock gears for is immaterial, it's about the utility. I can't speak for others, but know many that feel the same:

The primary use for my rig is touring, normal wheeling, a lot of it, between obstacles, etc is done at ~25 mph, so I'm not willing to give up normal low.

Rock crawling is a great diversion that I enjoy, but the '80 will never be great at it, it's too big, bulky, heavy, etc. That said, it's a fun precision driving challenge to see how far the big pig can be driven on/in the rocks. It's pretty much special olympics, handicap wheeling.:hillbilly:

So if there were a relatively easy to install, without major system changes, etc, crawler box available I would strongly consider it. IMHO the currently available options compromise what the rig is great at, to make something that the rig will never be great at somewhat better, so a compromise that I'm not willing to make.

Ha, that's a great description and perfect vision of a pig on the rocks!
Assuming you wheel in low, with stock tires and stock FD axles and Transfer, you are 4000rpm in second gear and 2700rpm in third at 25mph. That goes to 4300 in third with a 4:1 crawler, and 3250 in third with a 3:1 crawler.

Damn that's some fast speeds in low range IME. Why not just go 3200 in high range in first gear? You are sitting at peak engine torque to boot.

If the majority of your wheeling is 25mph, the price of a toybox seems better spent elsewhere to me.

It all pretty simple really, if you had any off-road seat time you would know the answers?

Who would run stock tires on any trail where we are discussing the possability of crawler gears? So your numbers are off for my 37's.

High range sucks on the trail, different shift map, not enough torque to pull even the smallest ledges, little compression braking, etc.

Some trails are all obstacle, most aren't, so for most trail days; More miles are run at higher speed between obstacles, more time is spent at ~1 mph on obstacles.

Thankfully, for simplicity sake, Romer rock crawling with 33/4.11 vs 35/4.99 was much easier to consider. A lot of snoflakes is the main reason I stopped my calculations at the hub.

Good luck, let us know what you decide to do.

Dont reference me in your discussion. I agree with Tools that you are arguing something you know nothing about and if you had any real offraod experaince would know it.

Don't take the bait Ken.....

ok at current exchange rates the marks 3:1 gears are in the $800 range and the crawler box is in the $2,300

any takers?

also i read Slee's tech on the crawler instal. any other crawler instal threads?

any reason I couldn't run the current crawl box down the highway at 75mph?

lastly i was speaking with marlins shop the other day and the tech guy suggested it may be possible to run some tundra auto tcase parts with the 80 tcase and thus use their new 4.7 adapter on the 80 series. i dont understand tcases so i cant comment
