Look at all the harcore rigs and you will get your answer..

just about anything lower than 4.11s dont hold up when you hit the 40" mark and above....this has been talked about in hardcore not too long ago. All the guys are re-gearing before it even reaches the diffs.

And if you ever re-geared your diffs with lower gears and sat the two side by side the diffrence is easly seen.

This is why portals are a good choice, you still have good strenght because of the 2:1 reduction in the portal box.

Update on the t-case gears: I got an email the other day from Liam at Big Balls Offroad (www.bbmotorsports.com.au). He does have 45% reduction gears for the HF2A/HF2AV. If I did my math correctly, they should be on the order of 3.6:1 for a crawl ratio of 44:1 w/ stock 4.11s. Though they are on the pricey side -- 1575 AUSD, equivalent to around 1200 USD -- I think I may go this route. Plus I'd be able to put a Big Balls Offroad sticker on my rear window. :D

It sound pretty nice and the perfect move for more crawl ratio ..

I'll just be patient and see what Christo and Gary are up to. With those guys working it out, you know it will function well.
Cheers,
Sean

all i know is that I have 4.88s on my 4runner, and i had a buddy in colorado w/ 5.29s set up exactly the same. he was hot s#!t until he broke his rear pinion on a trail and i made it up and helped him over. Also, I have a buddy in Houston that builds buggies, and he keeps stock gears in the axles and compensates w/ double t-cases, lower gears, or both just to keep from chancing a costly (and debilitating) mishap on the trail. I'd have much more faith in lower t-case gears than 5.29s w/ 6000+ pounds of vehicle on a tight trail.

I guess what I'm saying is, gimme 4.88 (hell, even 4.56s or *gasp* stock gears) in the diff and new t-case gears any day.

Anti-wrap bar or not?

Mini's are spring over...

If an anti-wrap bar is not used, springs will bend under torque loads and drive shafts will bind, causing pinions to be broken. It happens all the time....Spring over Land Cruisers, Mini trucks, Jeeps, Scouts, insert truck make here______.

Every time, without fail.

Does the BigBalls kit only affect low range ?

That was my next question as well....

If you are only changing out the low range gear set in the tcase, why would there be gear whine/noise in high range....the low range gears are not under load, and are free wheeling in the case.

I have installed Marks low range gear sets into a 40 series split case, and there is not any noise at all....

They have been in that truck for 35K+ miles now...

you keep your original high range and the reduction gears replace the low range gears

I only see a true advantage here if you are running very large tires or are looking for more engine braking on downhills...

yes, he had an anti wrap bar, just like me. most mini/4runner guys that do anything to the suspension and gearing know that you need an anti wrap bar. actually, my anti wrap bar broke free from the frame last time i was out and pointed the pinion at the floorboard so high that i couldn't move it until i removed my rear driveshaft, but my 4.88s held up fine.

if those BIGBALLS gearset gears were more on the order of $700-$800 there would be a lot more interest. By the time you pay for shipping from AU it is getting silly expensive.

With all the hardcore engineering types on this forum you would think someone could have a run of gears made by a high end machine shop. How hard can it be to make a couple gears? cant you just hand a pair of those BIGBALLS gears to the right guy and say "make a few dozen sets of these" for 4-500 bucks a piece? I think walmart is offering this service.

Low Gearing for the 80

Thought you would like to know I talked to Marlin as well as Advanced Adapters rep at the Calif. Four Wheel Drive Convention this last weekend and both are getting started with some 80 stuff. Advanced is working on a adapter to put the Orion in behind the stock trans. and Marlin is going to try and put a crawler box in front of the t-case.

Now that would be cool, one of the things I miss the most after selling my 4Runner is the twin cases and the selection of gear ranges.

I'm going to give big balls a holler again to ask about shipping charges. Since we don't live in Australia, they'll be able to subtract 10% off the price (VAT, or Value Added Tax) -- hopefully that $120 would cover the cost of shipping. I don't think $1200 total is unreasonable, considering the increase in capabilities. I'll just convince the wife and kids to live on beanie weenies for a few months. ;)

Yeah, they're obviously not the same as having an Orion or Atlas, but the lower t-case gears would allow me to keep my 4.11s, which I'd rather have once I throw a T04 on the engine. Just gotta finish my VW 16v turbo project first...

behind the stock tranny and front of the t-case are in both in the middle right ?

Or something like the slee crawler box .?

probably like the slee crawler box. the marlin would be between the tranny and transfer case.

quick quiestion, what's a t04? the turbo? I'm turbo tarded.
