How's the 2m coverage in NY? My dad is in upstate NY and wondering if this would be a good first rig for him or should I go with an HT?

The HT would be ready to go out of the box, but is limited to 5W. The mobile has much more power, but would require a power supply, antenna, cable, etc..

I will be using the mobile in the truck so no need for a separate power supply. A handheld is limited in range by the 5w power for sure. Truck to truck in a convoy it is probably fine. When you need to be out walking it is a great thing... otherwise it is limited. Coverage is like cell coverage... depends on what 5 square mile patch of earth you happen to be standing on.

How's the 2m coverage in NY?

Take a look at the repeater databases out there. 2m repeaters all over the place. The metro tri state area is saturated with them. Even in remote locations like Adirondack State Park there are repeaters to be had.
Depending where in upstate ny, I'm sure there's repeaters.

If he doesn't want to spend a lot of coin, those little Baofeng radios are going for $42 on Amazon right now. Fantastic radio for almost free.

OK, ordered the Kenwood. Thanks again for the heads-up!

Not a big deal, but tax was calculated on $144.95, so the BF discount is pre-tax and the MFR coupon is after-tax. :meh:

I went with the Kenwood over the other brand because is you are single DIN stereo in a 80 series it will fit in the space below and it has a front speaker.

I have the TM-271A mounted below my single DIN headunit. It takes a bit of kanoodling to make it fit right, but for someone of your ability it shouldn't be an issue.

Good to know. He's in Rochester.

Cool Pic?
Any complains on the speaker or set up?

Not sure how much difference on early and late model dash are but I see lot of room after measuring.

Ordered the 2900 today. Time to start studying for a license.

Oh it will fit for sure. The 271A is not as wide as the stereo head unit. I needed to make up some spacers for the side brackets to hit the Kenwood and there was some bending and drilling holes in the correct places as well. Not a big deal. There is some space on either side of the unit, but it really doesn't bother me. Depth and height are perfect.
My antenna is mounted on the rear left of the hatch so I needed a short extension on the cable. Again, not a big deal.

Somewhere in this section I did a writeup of my install before I got my licence. I originally had the Kenwood mounted to the rear of the center console where I had my old CB. I moved it after I realized how stupid that was. You need to see the display once in a while.

The front firing speaker is loud and crisp. Perfect for a dash mount. The 281A is the updated version of my 271A, but according to the 271A Yahoo forum, they are almost identical. Its a good unit and I like the Kenwood mics better than the Yaesu mics. Heavier and more solid feel to them.
