How certain are you that turbo is from a mitsubishi diesel? Ideally something from a mitsubishi 4D56 would suit the 2L well. That's a 2.5l diesel, so basically bang on. The thing is, yours looks like a Volvo TD04 to me with the square exhaust flange? That would have a different turbine/housing meant to flow more for a gas motor. I would expect that to take way longer to spool on a little diesel which is maybe what your problem is. Just a thought. (Edit: in more searching I do see ones that look like this on some bigger 4litre plus diesels also; same point tho).

It says Mitsubishi on the rear but I do agree with you the flange is completely different. Mine is a standard t2 flange whereas the 4D56 should have a triangle shaped flanged. It says TD04HL, might mean something like high airflow.

you could try putting more preload on the wastegate arm to help hold it closed longer, or even unhook (and plug) the wastegate boost sense line and see what it will push

Mitsubishi TD04HL 11G. I did a quick search and couldn't find much, I'll look later once I'm free of work haha. I do know the HL is the biggest of the TD04s you can get. So it's possible it's just too big for my engine and driving style. It does pull pretty good way up in the RPMs.

thats absolutely not too big for your engine. I have the td04 hl-15g on mine and that worked good but still a little big. Something is not right if you arent making boost, especially if its leaking oil.

My td04 was spooled at idle...

did you do a boost pressure check? ( pressurize the charge pipe with shop compressed air, including the tubro cold side)?

by looking at your wastegate arm it very well could be open at low pressures...try shortening it, also intake manifold gasket could be leaking

I just put a washer on the wastegate, maybe something will happen. I sprayed the welded section of my charge pipe and I have a few little pinholes. Would that be enough to cause such poor performance? Also possibly my downpipe is too restrictive maybe?

FWIW I welded the wastegate shut on my TD04 and removed the actuator and linkage. never saw the need for it, my egts were always under 1200 at all boost levels

pin holes in the charge pipe is not good, but wont prevent you from building some boost.. you should be able to hit 10psi even with some serious leaks.. but keep in mind any leak is lost power.

I would be leary of your rubber boost intake pipes, perhaps convert them all to metal?

What are your EGTs like just cruising around?

just tie wire that wastegate held closed temporarily and see what it does then
I second ditching that charge pipe, should be metal with minimal silicone couplings, there are better clamps too

my td04L -13t will cruise at 1100-1150, 1225-1250 max

my td04L -13t will cruise at 1100-1150, 1225-1250 max
Huh okay then I shouldn't be worrying about my temps at all. Max I've seen was 1000⁰F and that was me pushing it. I definitely will fab up a custom metal charge pipe then if you guys think so.

You see those EGTs while just cruising? Like flat normal highway driving? Seems high to me.

Flat highway driving I'm running 700-800F. Pulling 8% hills truck/trailer (8500lb) in 30C weather at 19psi I hit 1100F maximum. Coolant gets hot tho.

1000 -1100 at 90kph
1200-1225 max push 100-110kph
ya it does seem high to me too, valves might be a bit too tight
my pumps is retarded a bit as well to keep peak combustion pressures down to take it easy on the crank (will raise egt a bit as some of the burn is still happeneing in the exhaust manifold)

I turned my dynamic timing screw in a turn to see if the EGTs would go down. I watched my pressure shoot up to 2.5psi then drop down to 2psi. I'm at a loss. My wastegate is not the issue. Maybe could my downpipe be a big restriction?

its ....well...UGLY AF but no, that wont do it
you can get mandrel bent 90 deg exhaust pieces from lordco or other auto parts stores and cut to work if your worried about it

why dont you think its your wastegate?
cause i do

i had to muck with mine a bunch to get it to work at the pressures i wanted

I dunno its really hard for me to pull on it already, with the amount of forced needed to move it I'd think it would make more then 2psi. And the fact that it doesn't start building boost well into the skinny pedal.

Here's a video of the shaft play. There's a bit of in and out play too:(
