2L diesel swapped 1986 4Runner

Well I replaced my air filter today. I ordered an OEM one from Toyota. Was way shorter than the one in there. It fits perfectly unlike the old one -which needed to be squished down-.

The rubber seal on the bottom of the airbox was missing so I made a new one out of a mudflap. Works very well.

Sticking my hand in front of the intake and I was surprised how much more the new filter flowed.... Which led me to a new problem.

A damn vibration noise.. **** it's annoying. Kicks in at 1400RPM and gets worse the faster it goes. Took it for a drive and the floorboards and steering column vibrates.




If I take that little cold air tube off I don't get the vibration anymore but still get that weird noise. Any ideas?

Did a test fit on the turbo. Everything seems good.

And with the tubing I got from a friend

I think I'll get a 2.5" exhaust 90 degree bend and then a reducer and I should be good.

My only concern is the oil drain.

Doesn't leak but there's definitely a lot of adapters.

I'm gonna go ahead and put a few days of insurance on the bush truck just in case and slap the turbo on this weekend. I'll have to weld up a downpipe, make a final intake hose, and fix my janky return fitting.

Any advice I should know of? I'm just gonna leave the fuel screw alone for now, maybe turn it up half a turn.

on my 2l/ Td04 , I ran with the untouched fuel setting for a while because I was in the middle of selling my house.. it made about 8-9psi on the stock setting.
after I was more confident ( and replaced the clutch) I turned the fuel screw in until the idle speed started to climb up to 1500rpm, lowered the idle speed and it was very happy there at 25psi and plenty of power.

Well, finally the day has come.

I took great pleasure in ripping out the stock exhaust

there's so much restriction in that lower bend, I'm sure I'd get more power just by widening the n/a exhaust.

Anyways,

I am not a professional, I do not care about peak performance or show car level work. I'm a crazy Canadian with a welder, this is what comes out of me haha.

The downpipe was much easier then I thought it was going to be. Although it runs within an inch of the rear brake lines, so I'll probably order some of that exhaust heat wrap.

I have not touched the fuel screw yet, it doesn't spool up until around 2700RPM, I hope I can change that with timing and fuel. Usually, if I floor it in 4th I just get smoke and no acceleration, now I get a tiny puff of smoke, some faint whooshing noises, the smell of something burning, and it accelerates, so far a big win for me. I have a big exhaust leak at the downpipe flange, so I will try to make a gasket or something for it.

Better to adjust the boost compensator? You can turn fuel pin, change start point, and adjust spring preload. This allows pretty complete control of what happens with fuel after turbo begins spooling.

I still haven't put the compensator head on, just running the altitude comp still. Not looking forward to pulling the pump apart again lol

Is the compensator housing the same between altitude and boost? Maybe you just have to change the innards? Fuel pin, spring, cap? I think you have to ground pin tip a bit to do this if I remember right (to push it back in).

Huh you know I never thought of that. I will have to take a look and see.

hmmm just installed my boost gauge. It make 4psi. Kinda disappointing. doesn't make any boost until 2900RPM and normal driving I only see 1psi. Also I pulled my charge pipe and discovered a puddle of oil. I never noticed anything out the back.

just took it on a drive. I can hear air rushing around 2000RPM but the needle doesn't move until 2900RPM. I took it up a mild hill and it help 60km/h just fine but my EGTs went up to 900F. I then rent for a quick ride on the highway, getting up to 80km/h my EGTs went up to 1000F at 3psi so I backed off and went back home.

Do you have crank vent hooked to intake? That could be source of oil if so.

You're running rich enough there should be plenty more boost than that (exhaust energy). Is your waste gate working right? Maybe opening prematurely?

My crankcase is venting to atmosphere. My wastegate starts to opens at 7psi but id have to test it. It takes a lot to build pressure so I'm leaning towards a possible boost leak.

Where do you read boost pressure from? If there's a leak, maybe its in the line to your boost gauge?
