Any bike trails close to where we are camping for a beginner MTB rider? Looking for a casual ride to enjoy the sights. Thanks.

Yes, there are miles and miles of mtb trails ranging from easy to advanced. I know them well and will be bring my bike to lead a ride if anyone is interested.

Here is a good link for the area: http://www.mountainbikebill.com/LagunaRecArea.htm

It includes a great map of the area, worth printing a copy.

Derrick - good to know about I-8. Well aware of the 78. I usually go that route thru Julian or over Ortega and out thru Rancho California if I want to drop down Montezuma Grade into Borrego Springs.

Loose plan is go get some free wood from my golf club first thing Friday morning, pack the fridge and head out mid morning. Figure I'd miss traffic regardless of the route I took.

If you truely have more than enough wood and don't mind supplying it all, I'll skip hauling up a bunch. It'll save me gas mileage for sure! When my club removes trees from the course now, they cut and split it for the members to use so I don't have a problem bring up a rack full of wood.

Stay away from the 8 east Friday afternoon and 78 east from the 5 is bad as well. If you OC guys decide to do Ortega Hwy and come down the 15, you should exit at 76 and head east. This will take you up to the 79. Hang a right (south) and T into the 78. Hang a left and you'll go into Julian. From Julian, continue onto the 79 to S1, hang left and go until you hit the campground. This will be the least mileage, the least traffic, and the most scenic.

76 from I-15 to 79 ~35miles
79 to 78 ~7miles
78 to Julian ~6 miles
79 south from Julian to S1(Sunrise Hwy) ~5miles
S1 to Horse Haven Campground ~13miles

Is it Friday yet? I need to get out of town and relax.

Weather looks like it'll be very nice. Alpine forecast is highs in the low 80's and lows in the mid 50's.

I have plenty of oak and pine, just need help hauling it over to camp, so save your gas and save me a piece of that cobbler! :D

Awesome! There'll be plenty of cobbler and you WILL get a piece for saving me the time to haul up wood. Wife and I discussed last night whether I should even be climbing up on my roof rack Friday morning to begin with. Having the first of three injections of Orthovisc in my left knee Thursday afternoon. No cartlidge left so this is step one on my way eventually to a knee replacement.

What's the agenda? Just trying to figure when I should head up on Saturday. Any trail runs planned? What about a potluck? I don't plan on making anything but can bring supplies or whatever. I will most likely have my son with me, but if not I will bring a MTB.

This is great! For once, im going somewhere without packing Firewood. Much appreciated gentlemen.

Brent, what do you need to climb on your Rack for? You have a trailer now brotha.

Trailer is full and Sputnik is on the small rack I have on top of the trailer.

BTW - should I bring Sputnik or are their decent fire rings? Do we even know?

I feel for you and your knee. I go in on the 10th next month for a long awaited total knee replacement on my right knee. This trip is my last trip for awhile with the kids. I'm really looking forward to it.

I think for the most part we are all playing the weekend by ear. No real plans other than a potluck on Satruday evening...I would guess sometime between 5 and 6pm...

We must talk about your experience then this weekend and what you've learned. Orthopod has said that's where I'll be eventually.

For those of us with Ham radio capabilities, is there a local repeater that we can talk in on? Or just go with 146.520?

Good ones are Palomar Mtn, Laguna Mtn and Monument Peak. I dont have the frequencies memorized but I can post details in the morning.

I'll be monitoring these repeaters off and on during the day. They should provide good coverage in the area we will be in.

Palomar Mtn 147.030 (+) PL 103.5

Laguna Mtn 147.150 (+) PL 107.2

Monument Peak 147.240 (+) PL 103.5
