2000 Land Cruiser transmission woes

The issue seems to occur on vehicles that is constantly switching between 3rd and OD (4th gear). My PO had it driven on all flat lands in west TX and no issues even at 220K miles. I also did 20K miles on flat lands many times to TX hill country. The constant 3rd to 4th gear shifts almost at 55-75 MPH speeds and all good until I pulled over to get gas at Sams. Pulled out and no go like a flat tire... then sudden engagement into the 1st or perhaps 2nd gear... almost felt like the frame would bend! It is the needle bearing that is on the O/D that breaks leading to this transmission failure. Mine was 99% trash and only the housing and output shaft were salvageble. Did a complete rebuild at a transmission shop. Not all transmission shops do foreign vehicles.

Appreciate the feedback. If we get this one, it will live in Hill Country TX. We head back over there from Phoenix end of the month. Could be a roll of the dice, rather well informed one.. But ill be prepared in the event we do have issues.

I got mine rebuilt at a reputed shop Mr. Transmission in San Antonio.. and there is a lot of Cruisers in the hill country!

Indeed, we had Jens 62 all winter in HC last year. Embrace the pace! We stay there at least 5 months a year in the winter. Lookin to add 1 more.
