200-series Pinnacle of "Land Cruiser" in the States?

Doug's latest take on the 250...

I actually find myself agreeing with Doug's sentiment on this one. I've tried really hard to like it but it just hasn't grown on or moved the needle for me. I'm not qualified to say whether or not the 200 is the pinnacle but there certainly is nothing else like it. On the whole Toyota has made it very hard for me to give them any of my money at this time.

250 - Like some things, dislike some others, overall disappointed in the total package.

550 - Big downgrade in the luxury SUV segment. If I'm buying a Lexus I want some luxury, not just "nice Toyota" trimmings. Also with it now being part of the V35A recall. No thanks.

4R & Tacoma - Actually found the T24A to be a fitting power plant here and liked the drive of these however the NVH on that engine is terrible and they somehow managed to make what are supposed to be lower cost, built to a price point trucks feel cheaper than their previous generations. The 5th gen feels like a tin can compared to a 200 but somehow more robust than the 6th gen. Ditto for the Tacoma.

LX - More along the lines of what I'd expect from a Lexus in terms of materials, build quality, etc but I've never looked at the LX as a Land Cruiser, it's an LX in my eyes even though it's all the same mechanically. Predator grill is a tough sell for me. Again, V35A risk. Pass.

Tundra/Sequoia were always non starters for me (just too big) but having driven and ridden in both (have friends with them) they also feel lesser than their previous iterations. They are definitely nicer inside when it comes to seating, bells, whistles, things like that but everything feels on par with the domestics.

Toyota's were never luxury cars, it's true many of them are filled with plastics, vinyl, and cloth but the old ones just seemed to have better grades of that stuff not to mention being screwed together a bit tighter than the new ones.

As a former 200HE owner, I say the pinnacle now is the 300 series 700OT - modern triple locked land cruiser. Be gentle. 😅

Nope, you are all wrong. A Lexus is not a Land Cruiser. No Land Cruiser badge, not a Land Cruiser. And no, neither is the new Prado.

Toyota already tried to wrap a turd in a shiny candy wrapper a few years ago and called it a Supra. They are wrong too.

Call the 250 what it is. A Land Cruiser Prado. A low end Prado no less. Whereas the GX550 represents the high end of the Prado lineup.

I'd like to formally put this discussion to rest with the following indisputable fact.

This is the last land cruiser, and everything after has been but a cheap, unreliable imitation, meant for weak soy-boys:

Note the smooth, effortless travel over soft sand without having to air down. That's how you know this was the real deal.
We live out in the county and there is a farm near us that has a old covered wagon as yard art and the first time we passed it my 8 year old blurted out,”hey yall, look! It’s the original Land Cruiser!”. He’s a car guy just like me, this confirmed it.

Also, where I’m at all the 250’s are sorority chick/soccer mom cars or their weak husbands. The only 200’s I see besides ours are clean cut middle age well to do guys or their wives or little old ladies who I check the obits for just in case the good lord calls them home and they need to rehome there grocery getters.

Aside from not having the correct badging, why isn’t the new LX the successor of our 200’s?
(We have to accept that badging is not a good way to measure these things given the badging on the current “Land Cruiser.”

Isn’t the LX essentially the American version of the 300 that the rest of the world got?
But with an annoying front grill.

Why you trying to bring logic here man?

You’re killing the vibe!

New is bad!

V8s or nothing!

Hybrids are Elon Musk creations that make you sterile!

Or something like that….

You will see similar posts in the 80section, when the 100 came out and you’ll see similar posts in the 100 section when the 200s came out

That’s the nature of things.

New is crap, mine is the best, etc…

Starting to believe even some the folks in this section of MUD would find a reason to hate a LC300 in the states.
Suppose the pricing is the big “no-go” for most. Certainly would be for me.

More important question. What IS a replacement for the 200 in the future?

I don't know, I only spend some of my time in America. The other time I am "in the rest of the world" where we have the real Land Cruiser. Plus sarcasm and such...

Sadly right now, the replacement for a 200 is another 200. Buy another cream puff for later use.

I’m going to have to start checking registrations against the obit’s as @Artie mentioned. That’s strategic thinking! I too find myself agreeing with DD about the 250. I really wanted to like them, but can’t as fundamentally it’s a car lying about itself - if that makes sense. Like it’s posing. Which isn’t the car’s fault, but rather with Toyota marketing gENiuSeS who said “I’ve got a great idea!”

For me, I cannot fathom spending $100k+ to get a 300 series that’s trail ready from the factory in the US in the LX700ot. Instead of offering lower trims in the Toyota 300 series vs the VX versions we had in the 200 series, Toyota leveled up! They said “you know, I’ve got a great idea! We can make the Americans pay even MORE to get into a 300!”

I’ll be on the sidelines of anything 300 related until the pricing substantially drops or I hit paydirt with Mildred punching out.

Damn! My not picking up on sarcasm is embarrassing.
Apologies to all.

In my defense, I was into my cups a bit last night.

Also, I will admit to curiosity about the Lexus 600. Not that I have many complaints about my 200, but nothing lasts forever.
So I am a sucker for people’s thoughts on the 600.

I think Toyota missed an opportunity to improve on some key aspects in this new generation of trucks. They decided to utilize the hybrid tech for more power instead of better mpg/range, big mistake IMO. And that hybrid battery placement in the cargo area killed the usability of the trunk. The other grip I have is the interior space, it feels tight especially given the size of the vehicle. Sit in the LX600 the first thing I noticed was how high the center console is, and the narrow seat. I do like the look of the GX, best looking SUV on the market now.
