Matt,

Thanks a ton for the crash course. I have the fine line tape and will be using that stuff.

I have a couple more questions.

Today I painted the primer/sealer on the fenders, bib and aprons. That primer is real thin and it ran and dripped like crazy.

Questions:

1. How much coverage do I need to put over the building primer? Building primer is yellow and the sealer is green. Should I apply enough sealer so I no longer see the yellow or apply a light coat?

2. The instructions say that using the primer/sealer as primer/sealer rather than just a primer, I only need to put one coat on. Does putting more than one coat hurt? I immagine that it doesn't. Am I able to put several light coats on so I can avoid runs/drips/sags/theworks again?

Thanks,

Dave

I don't know if I'm familiar with the stuff your using. I'm assuming the yellow primer is a ureathane primer and the green might be epoxy since your using the term, "sealer" primer. If that is the case, very light if it's epoxy, 1 coat should do it. If the yellow primer is the ureathane, I'm assuming your applying that to sand smooth?

Putting more than 1 coat on shouldn't hurt at all, but 1 should do it. Sometimes less is more and keeping the mil thickness down won't hurt either ;)

1 question on the running, are you reducing this primer?

Yes, I am using the yellow primer with hopes of building it up and sanding smooth deeper scratches. However, it isn't turning out as well as I had hoped. Running short on time and need to get this finished up.

The sealer is a two-component type epoxy ureathane. I don't use any reducer and it is a 1:1 mix.

I will sand the drips down in the morning and give this a shot.

Thanks again for your help.

Dave

Today I painted sealer and the light color.

Don't have any time to write, but I need some input on these pics.

Question:

1. One the parts that are painted green, is there enough coverage? The green is the sealer/primer.

2. I am getting some orange peel with the light color. What am I doing wrong? Am I moving the gun too fast. Am I not sanding properly? Or is this normal?

Hi Dave,

Sure look good in the pics, nice and shiny

As far as the green, I think you have enough. You could go a tad heavier, but a light coat of epoxy over the ureathane primer is fine.

As far as orange peel usually 2 causes....the one you mentioned, moving the gun to fast and not laying down enough material. The 2nd is either not enough reducer or the wrong temp reducer. Either will not allow the paint to flow out for the seconds or minutes needed to lay flat and flow out.

Still looks great!!!

Hope that helps, Matt

Here are my black.....errrr I mean Olive Green parts. Haven't had them out in the daylight, but I am almost positive that there is a hint of green in them. I will post some pics once they are dry. Even though the color is very dark, I couldn't be more happy.

Taking Matt's advice and not running the gun so fast did help in some areas. However there are still signs of orange peel. Still happy with it.

The one thing that I haven't delt with yet is dust. This whole plastic booth thing has worked out fairly nice. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do and it actually is working. I've got chelsea running the glorified bike pump in the back and my gerry-rig vent system, things are working out much better then expected.

The plan for tomorrow is to lay down the primer. Then over the next couple day finish the topcoat.

Time for pics.

Ok, here ya go. Say hello to my brown fender. In one of the pics you can see the color I wanted it to be, a white envelope and my brown shirt.

I'm not upset with the color. I would just like to know what went wrong. Is it the guy pulling the trigger or the guy mixing the paint. Not that it matters, but consider it an answer to a leason soon to be learned.

I just hope the rest of my olive green, i mean brown will turn out the same color.

OKAY, enough of this TRAVESTY. I think that the best course of action is to just send the truck back to me (don't worry, I will help pay for half of the shipping). Just kidding. The truck is looking great. You are doing a very nice job on everything. Looking at the color that the fenders turned out, I would say the paint was mixed wrong. That isn't just a little variation. If it were me, I would load up some of the dark parts, take the remainder of the paint, and then visit the paint shop. If they mix the correct paint before you shoot the rest of the car, you could re-do just the parts already painted. And end up with the color you wanted.

Oooh, I meant to tell you. I was playing on Google Earth the other day. & I checked out the location in Boulder Canyon where this truck sat for 10-15 years. I had always heard that the pics on Google Earth are almost all a few years old. So anyway, if you know what you are looking for, you can find a satellite pic of these truck, parked on the hill with age-flat tires and granite boulders holding it in place, because all of the fluids drained out of the brakes and clutch. I don't know that most people would find that cool, but I figued you guys would see the coolness of that.--

Finally I have a vehicle that is one color.

Today Chelsea and I spent plenty of time getting the wagon ready for paint. Our plans were to put on the base primer and the building primer. As you can tell we only accomplished the base primer. First thing in the morning we will shoot the building primer. After a 4 hr wait for that to dry we will then sand down the building primer.

After that the sealer comes and then the first day of light color.

I hope you are all enjoying my post of the same pic. twice. Yes, I am stupid when it comes to computers. Yes, I am the one who wears the skirt when it comes to computers.

Abe, if it was as easy as packing everything up and heading down to the paint shop, I would have already done that. However, it is crunch time. 1 week from today I will be loading up the U-Haul; LV in tow and say good bye to the old and hello to the new big bad world.

Yeah, the color isn't right. But who else can say they have no idea what color their LV is. I mean, is it brown? black? olive green? All of the above?

Great question. Yep, I have a job. No kids. When I started I had 3 jobs. I quit 2 and now I bartend in the evenings. Believe it or not, bartending is awesome and I am pretty sad to leave my current job. My wife is self employed and so we are able to spend the majority of the day together. I know this lifestyle can't last forever, but for the past couple years my days were full of stress and anoying people. Just trying to soak up all the enjoyment life offers before I jump back into a job with more responsibility.

Thanks for the compliments. I really appreciate everyone's kind words.

Dave
