I second on the seats!
Also, I hope to be getting my column shift parts this week which I will install as soon as they arrive.
Are you sticking with the column shifter? What parts did you order and why? Just curious... cause i'm following in your path if you are sticking with the column.

I ordered everything from the shifter down to the top of the trans. Reason is because I didn't have any parts. Just the floor shifter which I am keeping in case I don't like the column. But I think I will like it. I had column in my '66 Bronco and liked that a ton.

I used synthetic material. As far as the brand, I don't know. We also had them do the door pannels. They are the same color and design. Very happy with those as well.

Today worked out to be very cool. Received the column shift parts and found out that we will be moving out of town Feb 13th. Couldn't be more excited. Now the pressure is on to get everything all finished up.

Anyways, did come more welding and bondo/sanding. Completely covered in white dust and grease. I also installed the column shift. Working pretty well, but i will have to wait until I can start the wagon to find out for sure.

Now I know what everyone is thinking...No, I will not sell my 8 ball shifter. Very, Very Excited about this find. In fact, I think I will keep looking around for a replacement shifter so this one doesn't get stolen out of my rig. I would hate to have that happen.

Anyways, here are some pics of the trans and door pannels.

Thanks for all the positive input. It helps me out a lot.

As a side note for you. You can buy a pool ball and drill thread and tap it to be used as any shifter. We did this on a friends mustang vert that was red. He got a 3 or 5 ball whichever is red and we drilled and tapped it. Something diff for sure!

Looking good. I havent driven a shift on the colum b/f I assume its not too bad. ??

Over the past couple days we have been putting a good amount of work into the wagon. Chelsea and I finished making our paint booth and taping off the LV. My dad also came over today to help with the first of three rounds of primer.

Here is what I got.

First primer is one that holds well when in direct contact with bare metal. I am going to shoot the entire LV with this stuff just to be on the safe side.

Second primer is a filling primer. It will be blocked out with 220 grit paper. I am hoping that I will be able to get the majority of sand scratches filled in with this stuff.

Third is the sealer. Sits better with the color than if I was to paint directly on the 2nd primer.

Tonight all we did was the first primer on the fender, hood, seat frames and loose odds and ends. I am planning on putting on the Second primer tomorrow morning on these same parts.

Once these parts are all painted, then I will wheel the LV in and start all over again.

This is my first time spraying with an HVLP gun. So far I am extremely happy with it. I have a gravity feed gun and that already makes a huge difference from what I have used in the past.

Anyways, here are a couple pics. Nothing great to look at. But I am happy to just be on with the painting.

As always, if you guys have read or see something that I have missed, please speak up. I always need your imput.

Dave, your project is looking great. You've made a ton of progress in such a short period of time.

In that last picture it looks like there is some surface rust on the underside of the hood. Are you treating that with anything special before you apply the primer?

You 45 looks great. What kind of paint are you using? Keep up the good work!

No, I pretty much just sanded the snot out of it. I don't know why the picture makes it look like there is a ton of surface rust, but that hood was very smooth when we finally primed.

Thanks,

I am using Endura paint. I learned about it on this forum and contacted the distributor down in San Diego. From what I have been told this is supposed to be real tough stuff. Guess we will find out.

Very nice work and a great writeup!!

I have a couple questions.
I am planning on painting the inside the same color as the light part on the outside of the wagon. I would like to shoot this all in one day. First day of painting would be the light color and second day of painting would be the dark color.

1. Is doing all this in one day a wise move?
2. Should I spray the inside and door jams one day and the outside another?
3. Should I spray the outside dark color first and then spray the light color second?

I deffinately could use a crash course in painting strategy. My local paint shop is full of nice people, but they aren't exactly dying to help with this one.

Thanks,

Dave

1. Not sure yet, what type of paint? Base/clear or single stage??

2. Probably yes, but would like to give you my 2 cents after hearing the answer to question #1. Also what are you doing, kinda an orginal 2 tone paint scheme?

3. Probably light first then dark, you may have a tough time getting good coverage going light over dark.

Dave,

I don't know if there's anyway you could do it in 1 day with single stage. I don't mean that to be a negative comment, it's just because your using a single stage, nothing wrong with that.

You are going to need probably at least 12 hours of drying before you back tape on single stage so it doesn't leave tape marks, might want to wait 24 hrs, but 12 should do it.

If your going paint the inside, you will be doing that first. You can paint the white (or lighter color) out into the door jambs, just onto the outside of the car. If you look at how I painted my firewall, look at how the paint just fades onto the outside of the body. You want to just bring the paint from the door jams and once you hit the outside stop. If you want to paint the darker color in the door jams up to the pinch weld you are going to have to wait at least 12 hours with single stage, back tape the white in the door jams and then just shoot that little bit of the darker color in the door jams. You want to do the same thing with the darker color, just fade it onto the outside of the vehicle outside the door jams.

Then you have to wait at least another 12 hours for that to dry. Then you want to back tape your door jams so you don't get overspray in there on your 2 tone scheme. Close your doors and paint your lighter color, then back tape and shoot your dark color.

I'm trying to keep this short and simple, I could ramble on for pages. I wish I was a little bit ahead of you so you could see how I am going to do it, it would make more sense then :)

Couple other things. When you back tape for your 2 tone paint scheme, make sure you use a fine line tape. Your auto body paint shop should have it, fairly common stuff. It comes in different thickness's, 1/4" or 3/8" should work good for you. You want this tape down first along the edge of the 2 tone paint scheme. Masking tape will bleed along the edge and you won't have a clean line. Put this stuff down and then masking tape and paper on top of this . Also wait about an hour with single stage before you pull the fine line tape, also pull it 90 degrees to the surface.

I know quick and dirty description, hope this helps.

Matt

Matt,

Thanks a ton for the crash course. I have the fine line tape and will be using that stuff.

I have a couple more questions.

Today I painted the primer/sealer on the fenders, bib and aprons. That primer is real thin and it ran and dripped like crazy.

Questions:

1. How much coverage do I need to put over the building primer? Building primer is yellow and the sealer is green. Should I apply enough sealer so I no longer see the yellow or apply a light coat?

2. The instructions say that using the primer/sealer as primer/sealer rather than just a primer, I only need to put one coat on. Does putting more than one coat hurt? I immagine that it doesn't. Am I able to put several light coats on so I can avoid runs/drips/sags/theworks again?

Thanks,

Dave

Here are a couple pics of the finished product on a couple of the misc parts. I have completely pumped on how these came out. Believe it or not, there are not any drips or sags.

The interior parts are going to be the same color as the outside of the wagon.
