Didn't think it would last long. Bugger. Sorry to hear that you live under an HOA. Great source of income for lawyers though....

All this talk of fancy names, and here I am using, essentially, my full name, and "4x4." Very creative, indeed...

Since I just learned I'm dealing with at least one Lawyer here...I just wanted to point out that you got your sources crossed. I have provided no referrals or recommendations, expressed or implied, for cruiserparts.net. This is not to say they are a bad outfit, I have simply never ordered anything from them. So unless there are two Rick's on this thread - I wanted to get the facts straight. :p

I stand (no, not Stan, you stupid iPad) corrected, it was Fish Taco.

Whenever I show off my FJ40 to friends, I tend to get the same response. They look at my truck, they look at me, they look back at the truck, and then there's always some variation of "WHY?!"

My response is always the same: "Hey, everything is broken, but everything works." These little trucks are the cockroaches of motor vehicles. It is d@mn near impossible to kill them. You can drive them up to their windshields in water, crash them into trees, pull parts off them, put different parts in, roll them, even set them on fire (just ask Vae Victus) and they will keep going...

Strongly considering changing my truck's name from Clustertruck, to "Roach..."

Hmm, the "RoachCoach"... Fitting indeed.

Scott - you are teetering on the edge of a frame off my friend. This is exactly how I started. I purchased and orbital sander to sand off the rear quarters and sill on Big Blue and wound up with Bigger Blue.

My bodywork assistant sanding away.

Might as well sandblast all the tiny bits

If I am going to repaint the exterior I need to repaint the interior. Out goes all of the interior.

If I have gone this far it only makes sense to buy a second cruiser since this one has the frame powder coated and the tub is pristine.

The moral of the story is to drive it and have fun. Yes, it would be awesome to go back to the stock paint color. But,.. It is a slippery slope and everyone here can attest that the rabbit hole is indeed very deep.

Keep up the good work!

Oh, I see how it happens. "Well heck, I've got the radiator out, might as well redo all the hoses. Heck, all them hoses are out of the way, lets redo that valve cover. Valve cover is off, lets get a Q tip and get every spec of rust out of the valves. Valves are clean, now the engine block needs paint..." I'm there baby!

But, reality drags me back. I'm eager to get it to stop, fire, breathe and go. It's like a little dragon.

I'll bet that sold in 20 minutes. Just the rusty outline in the dirt of a 45 is worth $5K.

Progress tonight, and major bummer. I was just going to do 30 minutes. (I can stop at any time - seriously).

Thought I'd remove the old brake booster and put in my snazzy new PullAPart find from yesterday. I pulled a 95 Camry for $28. It was mint. So mint in fact that it did not fit.

One of these things is not like the other. Didn't notice the difference until I tried to put it in.

FishTaco, your inbox is full. Thanks for the words of encouragement in the tranny rebuild.

Actually, another update from today. I drove up to Gallatin,TN today ('burb of Nashville) to TPI LandCruisers. Someone told me last week we had a TLC shop up there. They have an ok website, but hey, a chance to speak to a real person, so off I went.

Bob's shop is in a converted barn, facing away from the country road, surrounded by other farms and some houses. Has a big wooden wall with only a little sign out front about 3'x4'. I almost drove past it. Once you drive around back, feels like Cracker Barrel. Rocking chairs on the porch, old car and motorcycle signs everywhere, and old 55 stripped and rotting in the parking lot, and 2 pristine 40s under the lean to of the barn, one camo, one white. He's been in business since 75, so he's seen a few things. Nice guy, talkative. Most of his stuff is mail order, so I'm sure the parking lot doesn't stay very full. The only person I saw in my 45 minutes was the postman coming to p/u his outgoing packages. His dog appears on his website in the Customer Service area. Check it out.

This is what this dog looks like. He was just sitting there, very calm. I made eye contact and I thought he was going to swallow my face. I laughed when I saw the picture.

Bought the transfer case refurb kit $175. Has gaskets and 3-4 seals in it. Also bought the pinion seals for the diffs.

He had an interesting perspective. He said "These old Toyotas are not like other vehicles. You don't 'maintain' them. You fix them, and that part just gives you another 30 years of service."

He also said as part of "fixing" a 40 that you "Put in a Weber, and headers, get about another 30 horsepower." Interesting in that I just did the opposite to get it baselined again.

I agree with everything Bob said (I met him once when I had a 24 hour overnight in Nashville and agree with your take on the joint) except for the Webber bullocks. I've never gotten a Webber to run well on a 2f. My 79 hilux woke up and ran like a rocket with a Webber, but that 2f never liked it.

I took a 5 hour road trip with my then 4 year old daughter to pick up a lift kit and power steering kit from Bob. I actually passed his shop and had to make a u-turn. It was a fun trip.

What PS kit was it? 5 hours means you were driving the 40, or was it just Atlanta traffic?

Yea, well I've got a Webber to sell.

If it had not rained Saturday, I would have started on the transfer case rebuild. In reality, I needed to clean the barn out of 10 years of restaurant parts, POS systems, furniture, and a bunch of my tools. There is still a room full of kids bikes that need to be moved but I got it all organized. Loosing all that precious storage for a new pool and pool house.

Recognize any of this stuff? It might have been yours! The first 3 racks are FJ40 stuff only.

Best news is that my wife has agreed that the next structure we will build is a garage/workshop for me. She is tired of parking outside while I park all the projects inside. Right now, as I counted today, we have 8 vehicles for 3 drivers out of 5 in the house. Mind you, one is a diesel Gator that is 10 years old, but looks brand new due to being barn kept, one is a golf cart (gift from father in law - we don't even golf but helps us get around the farm) and one is a dune buggy we bought last Christmas (2011) that did not get driven, so that will be sold soon. The MINI Cooper is going soon too. Suddenly everyone loves the MINI even though my wife scoffed at it for years my wife and my kids won't ride in it.

And for my tech, I'm making my first brake line piece. Starting small. Plus it's 11:50 and I need to go to bed.

Well, there ya go. Lessons learned: NiCopp is not *that* easy to bend by hand. Tube benders are not for short lines. Making sure the line is cut square is vital, else you get wonky shapes. Make sure the exposed end is not longer than the step in the adapter when placing in the die block, else you get kinked edges (which I'm sure will leak). Cut your tube a bit longer (2-3") so you can redo ends if you goof. Putting a drop of oil on the adapter for the first press seems to help, and again on the second press, seems to help. Oh, and last lesson, the die block has some sharp edges.

Yeah Bob at TPI is great. I've gotten a lot of parts from him this past year and I always like taking the FJ40 up there and talking shop.

He did sell me on the Weber as well. I had a 32 on there from the PO and he said that it was under powered that the carb was made for a 4cyl, so I ended up buying the 38. It did give me an increase in HP, but in all honesty, I wish I would've gone with a Trollhole or rebuilt JimC Aisin.

Also, the white cruiser he has up there is a troopy and it is awesome.

Did you ever find a booster VV?

There is one in classifieds for 40$ right now. "(MN) early FJ40 parts" is the thread. Comes with a master cyl.

Sorry I can't link here. I'm on iPad.

Fish, I did. I ended up going with a reman for an '84 4Runner ($120). I found that my booster has brake fluid in it (it sloshes), and that you cannot find old enough vehicles at the PullAPart places to get the proper bolt pattern. The oldest with the correct bolt pattern is the 95(? I think) 4Runner or FJ62 (up to 98). The former is hard to find at a yard not already picked over, and the latter just doesn't exist. I wanted something that if it failed, I'd know what to get, and would already have the linkages sorted out.

I was leery of a 30+ year old set of diaphragms for what I consider a key safety component of the vehicle. That said, I've not installed it yet, so we will see. I started a thread called "1976 - 1980 FJ40 Brake Booster Replacement List" with a bunch of cross reference data in it for vehicles that have the same bolt pattern.

Thanks for looking out for me.

I'll have to take a closer look at it, it was behind a wall. I'm glad I have gone back to "stock" on the carb for now at least.
Question - I have a header on now. Should I switch back to the stock manifold?
