!!PLEASE HELP!!

Hello everyone -

I'm a new active participant of this forum however had used it many times to help learn how to accomplish some of the minor fixes I've needed to perform on my 1997 Limited Edition LC. I've owned this vehicle for 16 years and love it and look forward to another 16!

Recently the LC overheated and was leaking. The leak was found (by a friend and retired BMW mechanic) to be in the metal lines into the rear heater core. He suggested that we could bypass the rear core and it would be an 'easy fix' rather than try to replace the metal lines. I went with that option which appeared to work ok for a short time. Last night the vehicle was 'choking' at an idol, started to leak and I barely go it home. When I did the temperature was rising and when I opened the hood it looked like the leak/steam was coming from the hoses below the egr valve, which I believe are the hoses that were bypassed. Prior to bypassing I directed him to THIS forum where I read it was important to be sure to bypass it in a certain way (to complex for my abilities) which he said he followed - but thought there was still air that needed to be burped out of the system

I can get pictures or video's posted to this thread if you tell me what would be helpful to add.

Short questions are:
Has anyone had this experience?
What is the best way to correct this, both with and without bypassing the rear heater core?

I really don't want to take it to the dealer and get reamed $$$.

Thanks for listening and I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Steve

Agree with phil. Pre formed 90 hose helps accomplish this without the hose kinking.

This may help to review how yours hs been bypassed

"Under the EGR" would not be the rear heater hoses. Pictures would be very helpful. Sounds like it could be the PHH - Pesky Heater hose or the #2 Bypass which are located under the intake manifold. Search those terms and you should find a lot of discussion and pictures,

How about a little more detail on the initial overheat?

Did your buddy say or have you experienced any undue amount of steam & sweet smell from exhaust? Dipped the oil since the overheat?

Yes - I'm hinting at the HG but want to keep it at hinting until we get better descriptions of events. I get you being in Maryland & you very easily just rotted the RR heater hardlines.

As the longtime owner has the headgasket already been done? (if so we can rule that a dead topic).

You really do need either a 90* bend hose or a long length hose to gently make the bend.

This X2, if you have no record of your PHH ever being changed, that's where i start looking for your leak.

Like @Rifleman said, start small & cheap, work back & up to the HG.

I really doubt it is the HG - especially if you have a HG receipt - then you have a "ankle biter" issue you need to flat stand in front of the motor while running in & wait to see it leak.

This could be a simple loose hose clamp - if you watch the motor you'll be the resident expert on your issue. You do the time, you'll see the crime. Forums are no replacement for simple eyes & hands on your 80 - some forget that in our IT age.

Pack coffee, but not a smartphone to watch a old Seinfeld ep on - just watch the motor & wait for the "paint to dry".

That would be what I'd do.
Maybe even why I post more answers than questions, and I'm no stranger to asking when I'm out of my depth.

I think I got this now - I need BOTH the straight 5/8" piece from Wit's AND the Gates 28467 90 degree piece, correct? Thanks.

The straight piece is nothing special and will be available were ever you pick up the Gates 28467.
