Well, sometimes it seems like a to-do list on a truck will never end.

Tomorrow is my last day of prep for Moab plus I got to do all the pre-trip stuff as well. Not much left to do to the truck, getting an alignment in the morning.

Back in late August I did some road tripping and off-roading in the truck in Oregon and here in Idaho. At the end of it all, I came up a pretty steep pass from the north and down into Boise. This is a place I always like to take a truck for a test run because it is a 2k+ pass, curvy mountain roads, not far to some dirt and wash board, ect ect. Well, coming back in August the Cruiser was in 2nd gear up the pass, nearly floored and barely holding 35mph.

Today I took the Cruiser up there for a good test run. Holy crap!! It will now do 55-60mph up the pass in 3rd well before full throttle no probs at all. And this is with 315’s vs the previous 265’s. The washboard, hardly even feel it.

Today I was reminded why I got back in an 80, they are so good once you get them dialed in.

Before and after pics from this morning.

I was going to have the wheels off the green 80 polished but when I took them to my wheel shop, they were like ya not going to happen. To much corrosion, can’t do it. So I let them sell me on powder coat. I have always been fond of gun metal be it on wheels or on the body. I am very happy with this.

I couldn’t help myself tonight at dinner with this one. ;)

Ya it’s got a bit of stink bug. I have 1” and 1.5” spacers in hand. No back seats in it though right now and only the spare in the back. I am waiting to install until after the trip. I want to see how it sits loaded with gear for a four day trip first.

Cheers

Looks great!! What do you attribute the performance gains to??

It’s hard to nail it down sometimes when you do a bunch of work all at once. I would say though vacuum leaks and a very dirty TB + intake and a plugged up EGR system.

The only damage to the Cruiser.

Sliders did their job.

It was a great trip, the Cruiser did fantastic. One Heep owner on the trip said he is switching to an 80 after following me for a day and sitting in my 80.

I put in a Metal Tech 1.5" spacer in the front to get rid of stink bug.

I bought this Cruiser to use it.

I moved in a new big fatty four bay shop three weeks ago.

I am currently driving the Cruiser every day over 30 miles to the shop. I would like to get my caster to 4.5* or there abouts, I am currently at 2.5* and don't like it. Other than the stiff OME shocks and wanting more caster, the suspension is doing excellent.

Factory speakers are wasted, not much on the market for a thin speaker. I think I found a great solution, at least for me. More to come on that as parts show up and get installed.

Come January it is a year with this truck. It has come a long ways already and is running very well. I would not hesitate to take it on a long trip down into Mexico tomorrow.

First upgrades...

Only point here is to protect and preserve, looks don’t matter so much.

My steering wheel is in good condition for the age.

But who knows when it will be NLA. For $200 I couldn’t help myself!

Load of parts showing up today. Hood and rear hatch shocks in it which is good. What’s on it is driving me nuts.

Where did you get the dash cover from?

How are you liking the Yokohamas now that you have some street and trail miles on them?

So off-road they hook up very well. On road there is a little road hum. I have noticed when it is below about 25* and the truck sits they get flat spots which will cause a vibration until they warm up, once warm all is well.

JL Audio sub won’t be here for a few days but, oh ya! :)

The Morels are not cheap at all so I only ordered one set to try them out. If all goes well I will be buying more of them and running that through an amp.

I am assuming those are the Vitrus Nano's?

I am assuming those are the Vitrus Nano's?

Yes, 6.5”.

I got nearly an hour commute to the shop every day so tossed in the fronts last night. FYI, these do take a bit of customizing to fit but depth wise they are money. The sound, really good.

I still got to mount the crossovers but for now I can turn it up and not hear blown speakers crackling. I am going to get another set for the back doors and a set of good tweeters for the dash. Run it all through a four channel amp don’t have time for all that right now though.

Cheers

Are you going with a sub in a box, or are you incorporating it into the passenger stock location?

It is a JL Audio sub in a box, 8”. Running it through a JL Audio amp. Had the same sub in my 100, worked great. Eventually I will build a platform in the back and fit the sub box somewhere into that. For now though it will just be in the cargo area.
