Hey guys,

What is a rust-free 1985 4Runner worth that is immaculate but has 200K miles? Seems like this is a really good year since it has the 22RE and solid front axle. The guy wants $ 3K and it looks like a real beauty. Good price? What is the life expectancy on this engine if well maintained?

I wouldn't sell you my rust-free 1985 for $3k. I would say that's a pretty fair price. Althought the engines will run longer than 200k, you are going to find the engine output to be quite a bit lower than factory. You might think in terms of a rebuild in the near future with an upgraded top end and header. I think it's still a good price.

Is it an SR5 or Deluxe?

Thanks. Not sure about SR5...probably not since it has the factory steel wheels and no chrome.

Naaa. I paid $4500 for a real nice SR5 xcab in 2000 sight unseen. I did get lucky as the truck was real nice, but I should have tried to knock off a few hundred. I shouldn't have sold it.

$3k sounds fine.

extracab and 4Runner are not the same thing .. 3K easlily a bargoon ...

85 Runner is the MOST desirable unit out there (besides the Trekker)

Probably the Deluxe (base) model. The SR5 came with instrument cluster with tachometer (although this is easily changed) and split rear folding seats with headrests among other things (like power windows and door locks, sunroof, etc.). They also came with nicer rims and chrome trim.

Side note...

Are there good aftermarket winch bumper manufacturers for these? I also assume that they have leafs all the way around? I am always thinking ARB and Old Man Emu. I installed it on my FJ60 and love the quality.

I am going to check this rig out this week when my inlaws head back out of town.

Yes they have leaf springs all around. I went OME suspension and really like it: heavy front, medium rear and heavy shocks all around. I also went ARB front bumper with a Warn M8000.

Rear bumpers are a bit more difficult to find. I got Kennessaw Mountain to make one for me. They build great bumpers but you have to be patient with them as they build them on order.

LCEngineering is a great source for headers, body bushings, exhausts and engine tweaks. Of course lots of other vendors offer similar items.

Good luck.

That is exactly what I did with my FJ60. I am not as concerned with the rear bumper at this point...I bet these look bitchin' with an ARB and winch.

3k? Buy it! Assuming it is mint etc... Like many others here, I wouldn't sell my 85 for all the tea in China. Now I realize I'm not much of a tea drinker but... As for SR5 or not, well depends how much you can/will do to it. Changing some seats, gauge cluster etc... is all pretty easy. Sunroof? apparently it's not an SR5 option necessarily. That would be the hardest thing to swap IMO. Chrome don't get ya home, so good riddance if it doesn't have it.

3K is a reasonable price for an 85 with fuel injection. Especially if it is clean and well taken care of. If you keep up the maintenance you could easily squeeze another 100K if not more out of it.

Just to give you an idea, I bought my 85 4runner (efi) from the second owner who had owned it since 1990 and kept it in a storage unit since 90, only taking it out a few times a year for camping or mild trail runs. It had a lot of upgrades (DOA built 22RE, marlin tcase gears, 2" lift, rear limited slip, bumpers etc) but was spotless. Beautiful inside and out and not a dent or scratch on the original paint job. I paid $5,000 for it. You might try and knock it down some (in case the guy doesnt know what he is sitting on) but 3K is definitely a reasonable price. Go for it, you are going to love it. I love mine and plan to keep it the rest of my life.

I paid 3200 for a 84 solid axle. It needed tires, and has 3 lil bits of surface rust. Its interior is OK, now it is worth way over 5000 imho. I have put more than 2000 grand into it these past few months. Now it just needs some Protection
