Nothing exciting to report and no new pics...

I am trying to track down a 2-way or 3-way fridge that will fit in this pup. The only fridge I have found that might work is the Dometic 2150 which stands at 17 1/2" tall. I have about 18" of clearance. So this should work... but I am having a difficult time locating one of these fridges.

I have been scouring Craigslist, etc. I hope to run into one eventually...

Does anyone have one for me?

Oh, and I picked up another pop up recently. A 1973 Hilltop... think I may try to build a double-decker pop up out of the two I now have! What do you think?!

Sir. Could you do some work on your trailer? I'm anxious to see some progress. Thanks.
Jake

What do you mean by a double decker pop up? I don't get it! Can't visualize what that looks like!

Time to dismantle the trailer!!! This thing stinks like hell!!! 80% of it is going straight to the dump!

Anybody wants $20 to do this for me??? just joking!

I work at a full restoration shop here in San Luis Obispo CA.

I have torn apart some pretty nasty cars at work before but nothing has made me sick to my stomach like this little trailer!!

Will be glad to be done with thrashing most of this junk! God that smells!

Lots of work, but lots of fun...cool build!

uglyoinker- I really wish I had been working on the trailer. Truthfully, it has been sitting in my garage untouched for months. Shameful. Alas, I will soon begin to mess with it... like in the Spring. :)

Get outside- Just kidding about the double-decker pop-up. ;)

Again, rad project! Great pics! Thanks for sharing... did you finish gutting it yet?!

Adventure Copan- Thanks!

I should have an update with pics soon...

Don't let it sit for too long or you may want to give up on it later!

About the double decker; I thought maybe you were thinking a side by side thing or extra long or who knows what!!!
Glad it was just a joke, most crazy ideas like that end up in the landfill!

I got rid of all the nasty canvas, the disgusting cushions, drilled out the outside sheet metal panels so they are all loose, starts disassembling the roof and stopped!
I kind of got sick and didn't work on anything else the next day!

I'm also married with two little kids so time is very precious around here!
Will continue when I feel better and have some hours to spare!

Good luck on your project!

I know exactly what you mean. I'm married also and have 9 month old twin girls. I hope to have this rebuild done by Memorial Day... or the next Memorial Day. :)

Placed an order today for a new canvas for the pop up! This is huge. It'll be the same basic color with tinted windows, vinyl over the bed ends, etc. But brand new! Gonna make a big difference... can't wait until it shows up.

Nice! Where are you buying the canvas from and how much? If you don't mind saying
I got a 3 1/2 y old boy and a 1y girl! This is a 3 day off weekend for me but my wife is working all 3 days so time for the projects is very limited - zero to almost none - may be able to get a few little things done here and there and that's it!
No complaints here! I'm very happy with where we are in life right now!
Good luck over there with the project, congrats on the twins and Merry Christmas to the family!

Thanks for the Holiday wishes! Hope you enjoyed Christmas and all that. :)

I used to have time, now I have twins. Its all good though of course!

I purchased the new canvas from Al at Bear Creek Canvas. Good guy to talk to- took the time to answer all of my questions. The canvas cost $775 and included free shipping. Apparently they are currently running a sale on in-stock Coleman canvas for $50 off retail. I found what looked like the identical product for sale elsewhere from between $890-$920.

I'll sell you my old canvas if that will work for you for a bargain! It'll probably fit... :)

Did I mention the hail damage to the roof of this pop up?! AAARRRGGHH!!

Spent a couple hours the other day futzing with the roof. Almost finished scraping/cleaning all the old layers of caulk off along the seams of the roof and the end caps on this pup. I was hoping to perhaps reuse some of the roof aluminum, but instead I'm gonna try to find a single sheet to get rid of the seam down the middle of the roof. The roof aluminum is pretty beat. I'm going to call a few local shops... Thanks for the advise on this one folks!

After further inspection I found several more small holes in the roof.

I also popped the roof and took a closer look at the ceiling... stripped all the thin paneling along the inside of the roof for a better look at how its all built. Pretty solid/simple construction actually. The roof is quite lightweight/strong... I'm diggin' the design of this vintage Coleman!

Haven't dug into the roof itself... I figure if I'm going to replace the entire roof then I won't have to bother stripping rigid insulation, panelling, aluminum, etc. I'll probably have to make my own roof sandwich anyway. :)

I'm going to want to replace the weatherstripping along the base of the entire roof. Anyone know where to source it?

I need to finalize a few important details as soon as I can with this build. Any advice, pearls of wisdom, or even chit-chat appreciated! :)

I have old Cruiser rims laying around that I'll be using for this pup. I am still deciding on tire size...

I need to decide on the new suspension as well. I am planning to stick with leaf springs, but not exactly sure yet what I'm going to use. Trailer specific springs, car or truck springs, new vs. used, etc.

I need to decide on an axle ASAP also. Since I'll be running old Cruiser rims I'll need six stud hubs. I've seen folks run a 3500 lb. axle on similar setups... seems excessive. Can I get away with a lighter duty axle? I don't plan to carry much extra weight, but it adds up quick. I want this pup to be stout so I can drag it occasionally through some rough spots. I am hoping to avoid needing to add brakes to this setup.

Any thoughts?

Thinking outloud...

I would use larger(longer span) springs, and stay away from the #3500 lb. ones.

DO NOT get a 2500# axle...you'll destroy it first time on anything heavy duty..i.e. washboards, trails, off road.

There are reasons for going with the heavier axle, exactly why I'm not remembering right now. Could be that you need it to get into 6 lug wheel hubs. It also gets you bigger bearings which I see as being a good thing.

Buy the axle to have brakes, even if you don't buy the brakes right now.

If you are going to add shocks then I'll strongly suggest going with the most supple spring that will carry the expected final weight that you can find. The reason that trailer springs are stiff is so that they don't need damping.

I'm of the rare opinion that you don't *need* the tires on the trailer to match the size on the truck. Yeah, it buys you a second spare. The reality is that if the trailer spare tire size is close enough you'll use it anyway. Based on towing my TrailBlazer around on 33-12.50's I'm moving towards putting the trailer on 31's. At the moment all of my tow rigs are on 33-10.50's.
I once accidentally towed that trailer almost 350 miles before catching that one tire only had 12 psi in it. It didn't get hot (I check that about every other stop when towing) and the trailer wasn't bouncing around. In retrospect that lack of bouncing should have set off alarms in my head, because once that tire was run up in pressure it did bounce more.

I'm building a expedition trailer and I went with a 5200lb axle so I could title it... Here in TX to get an actual title ( not registration ) your axle must be at least 4500lb's. My springs are 4800lb's total and I'm running brakes with 6-5.5 for matching Yota rims.

Agree with the last poster, if you go with really anything less than 3500lb axle and springs you will destroy them on the trail. You will find most people will tell you that.

To replace the roof skin , look for a place that repairs big rig trailers . They can get .040 skin up to 102" wide and how ever long you want .

How will the axles get destroyed? Dragging them on rocks?

I'm in the same boat and want to build up my '02 coleman taos.

I don't know that it's the axle as much as the springs that fall apart under the off road abuse. I don't have any experience with this, but many a persons have told me this.

In the lighter axles both the bearings and the spindle pins are rather small. Wouldn't surprise me if those are not up to being used off highway.
