Just made an account after lurking for a decade or so... Just got some good tires on my '09 GX470 (Low miles with Nav and no KDSS and I'm happy with it). After much thought and research I ended up going with Goodyear SilentArmor tires in 245/75R17. It gets me the height of a 265/70R17 without any rubbing at all and the tire only weighs 40 lbs so I still get 20mpg on the freeway  besides these reasons, I am a huge fan of skinny tall tires!

Still liking the skinny tall tires? I want taller tires, but same mpg would be nice also. How's ride on and off road? Grip?

Edit: first post was a mess of autocorrect

I am still loving my 245/75R17 Silent Armor tires @ $140/tire delivered. They do flawlessly off road, I get 20mpg on the freeway (only at 60mph on cruise control- and 15mpg around town) and they should last up to 100k miles if rotated regularly. They are excellent on road- far better ride than the stock tires, one caveat is they are 4 lbs heavier and 1" bigger- so you feel a touch of sluggishness between 1,500-2,000 rpm compared to the stock tires. You can feel that they are not as good for zipping around in traffic- but after 2k rpm the V8 unleashes like a beast as it should- it's almost like an on off switch now or a mild "turbo lag" feel due to the tires.

I am about to install a 2" dobinsons lift, and after taking time on the trail this month, I think a wider tire may be a bit easier to place on rocks and in turn lift the chassis over other rocks. Depending on the type of obstacle, I think a wider tire could be better. On the other hand- these skinnier tires will be super sweet in the snow that is coming this season and- I prefer the look of the skinnier tires. I think the best balance is "Pizza Cutters" but cant fit those without a lift. I will plan to keep these current tires, although after the lift- I am very tempted to throw on Fj Cruiser Steelies with "Pizza Cutters"...

FJC Steelies?

I like the fj Steelies with my 255’s “pizza cutters”
I’ve been thinking the same thing

Oh definitely, but that opens a whole new can of worms.
Would have to really beef up the drivetrain then. May just get into another 80 or something instead.
Word.

Problem is the stock wheels look great- as long as the finish isn't flaking too much- but it just started flaking when my tire shop mounted my new tires. Your wheels look great in the pics, how is your powder coat holding up?
