There is nothing in the world worse than saying no to a request like this and you being wrong.

Replace

Agree, I already sent in the request for my @beno box, but was curious how much truth was in this claim.

And this my friends is why Mr. T uses spring clamps and not hose clamps...

Discovered while trying to put the engine covers back on this weekend. Had the T-belt serviced a week or so ago. All looked good upon initial inspection. Fast forward to Saturday and tried to put the main cover back on and realized the upper hose was in backwards and wouldnt let the cover seat. Started looking more closely and notice pink running along the tank/core seam. Topped off and drove to church and to run a few errands yesterday, come home and notice weeping near the neck. Today I drained the rad to pull the upper hose and flip it and to see if I can find the source and discovered that the neck is crushed and a piece is literally gone. So now the GX is down for a few to get the new rad and proper clamps. Tomorrow a call will be made to the mechanic to discuss this matter further.

Once the old rad is out I will pull the tank to confirm the missing piece is inside. Fortunately as I understand it, it should not have traveled into the motor as the flow is out of the motor into the tank and thru, so it should be stuck somewhere in the bottom of the tank.

Also, anyone know how much trans fluid I will loose on this adventure since I will need to top that off when I swap the new rad in. And better yet how to add it? I havent looked underneath yet, but don't see a dip stick under the hood.

TIA

If it's newer than 04 it won't have a transmission dipstick if I understand correctly. Best I can say is try to catch and measure. It's one of the reasons I wemt looking for an older GX...

Worm clamps or spring clamps, it doesn't matter when the radiator goes from black to brown it's time to replace it. Once brown the plastic tanks have the consistency of a wet cereal box.

Any reason not to reuse the OEM clamps vs buying new OEM when replacing? Are they known to weaken over time?

Well that was what I feared. I was thinking that was going to be the plan. Probably by a large farm syringe and try to refill the cooler from the top after I get the lower line back on.

Yeah, I noticed the discoloration, and may have been a blessing, but if it was already cracked when they did the belt, a little heads up would have been nice.

I went ahead and pulled the fan and shroud. Why the hell they decided to make these things so they have to come out together is a mystery to me. And jezz those nuts holding on the clutch unit are a serious pain.

And here is the leakage that I was seeing along the joint.

Either way, it is time to replace. I'm just glad it isn't a terrible ordeal to do. I was going to get one from @beno, but since it is a little more time sensitive and not too old, I am hoping the local dealer will have one in stock, or at least can get it by Wednesday if I call first thing in the morning.

Also figure I can do the plugs while I have it down for a day or 2.

I always reuse. Not sure why the shop trashed them other than laziness.

Might be a good time to flush the trans anyway, if you don't know the history. Remove the pan, clean the screen, replace all parts and fill. Sealed trans will have a drain plug and a check-fill plug on the bottom. The actual fill plug is on the side of the case, so you'll need a pump to fill it.

Depends on the mileage. I've always been advised (even recently) that, unless the transmission has had regular maintenance, it's better to "leave alone" an automatic transmission with, say, 125k+ miles. The claim is, draining/refilling or worse, flushing, is likely to shorten, rather than lengthen the life of the tranny. Plus (and there are also those who don't go along with this), 2004 and up GXs (the ones without the dipsticks) have Toyota WS fluid, which Toyota claims to be a lifetime fluid.

If it were mine, I would add what was lost, but I wouldn't drain/refill or flush.

Just another opinion..........

Understand the point of view, but I've experienced the well known shudder in my A750F (same as 03-09 GXs) that was only cured by dropping the fluid (engine off and passive draining is my only recommendation) and then refilling approximately 5.5qts. I did that twice within a two month period using factory WS fluid. Trans had 143K on it. Shudder went away, no other issues.

Preface to the following comments, I needed to get the radiator ordered otherwise I would have gone thru normal channels and gotten proper advice on parts, so this is an after the fact question.

Does anyone know if the 4th Gen 4Runner (03-09) Radiator cross-over to the GX470 of the same vintage? I was told by my local dealership counter monkey that they do not and that the unit I needed was Lexus specific. I know that they share lots of parts and would have thought that the radiators would have been one of those parts. Just seems odd that they would make a one off for the GX, but I also know the front-ends are different and may be different enough to require a different configuration.

Just wondering for my own curiosity and to kind of educate the dealer parts guy on it if he was given bad info.

Thanks,

Edit: Lexus Part Number is 16400-50313 Toyota PN 16400-50300

So xxx13 is the difference.

Did you have water infiltration or did the shudder just occur on its own? I agree on the fluid replacement with a shudder, as there's really no other option. I had to do a drain/fill because a shudder due to the faulty 1st gen. transmission vent design

You know WHO to ask...

H2O infil possible, as my factory vent extension only went to the the base of the firewall (I've extended it up to the top of engine compartment). But the shudder was thoroughly discussed on other FJC specific forums in the early days (2006). Additionally, one of my coworkers here has a GX that has never been off pavement nor a water crossing - same shudder. I tend to think the "lifetime" claim is a bit generous, especially for those of us (in this hobby/habit) that don't trade in every 75K or 3 years.

Well, let me hang on a second. The more I am looking at the internal supersessions, the more I think that the fitment actually could be very similar. Tell tale sign is that the fan shroud and the hoses are the same.

Go with the Toyota part. Sorry about the wrong info. Sometimes after 20 hours of looking at part numbers and schematics my mind wanders.

I would let it wander home to your pretty new friend and leave the part numbers at the shop :)
