100 too stiff after OME medium lift

Im in the market to lift my LC. Im glad to see this conversation before i did. Why not replace the OME shocks with something more conventional like a lower cost Bilstein, Rancho, or Ironman? Is the Ironman shocks a bit less harsh?

Put on Ironman foam cell shocks a few weeks back as the OEM got a bit harsh after adding the front bumper. Was very pleasantly surprised at how smooth they were but definitely tighter and much flatter in the corners. This is with spacers in the rear and cranked torsion bars. OEM shock did fine with the 1.5" lift but the extra weight of the bumpers did not agree with the stock shocks.

Is there a different shock combo that works with the OME 2.5 medium lift kit that doesnt use OME shocks or forces me to buy $2,000 Fox, or Icon shocks? I dont plan on buying bumpers any time soon and ideally i would like to keep my ride smooth with a little added stiffness.

Is there such a thing?

Look at the IronMan shocks - they have two options for that lift, based on weight (bumpers, etc.) I've got IronMan TBs and 2.5" springs with the IronMan Foam Cell shocks. It rides great. A friend just drove my 100 - like 20 minutes ago - after test driving a 2015 4Runner and said "Damn, this rides better than the new 4Runner". Yes - it's subjective. But, I am very (!) happy with the ride - for a lifted truck on 33s... can't see how it gets any better.

I guess my AHC was totally gone. It rode worse than my Excursion before Slee removed my AHC and installed their OME 1.5 lift kit. It rides way better now. Haven't had if off road or even on washboard yet. I will in July for sure. But on highways, potholes everywhere, it's great. I'm sure a nice ARB bumper would smooth them out even better but that will have to wait for next year. Slee did a great job, really nice people too.

Ride comfort is really more about the combination of spring rate, dampening rate, and planned cargo load; not just shock/damper design. The Nitro-sports are really more of an overland damper than a DD or wheeling damper

The OME 4" heavy springs combined with Nitro-sport dampers with 1200 to 1600# of cargo and armor on my 94 FZJ80 is a perfect set up for an overland rig, but too stiff for a weekend wheeling rig

The OME 2.5" heavy springs and HD T-bars combined with Nitro-sport dampers with 400 to 600# of cargo and armor on my 99 UZJ100 is a very stiff and uncomfortable ride for a daily driver/occasional off-roader. One step away from a fork lift and not recommended. I used to tow my rally car with my UZJ100 so needed the heavy springs, now its gone so I'm going to OME mediums.

And, FWIW, just installed a set adjustable Koni Raid dampers on my UZJ100. The ride difference between the Koni's and the OME Nitrosports is very notable. Much improved ride quality even with the OME heavy springs still on. No more rear end floating and traction loss on wash board gravel roads. I also like the option of adjustable rebound tuning for heavy loads when needed or not. I'm impressed with the Konis, and, so far, they are well worth the added cost over OME. Will report back when I get the mediums installed.

Also, IIRC Ironman is done in US.

Thanks, I guess after driving a 56 Power Wagon and a lifted 88 Grand Wagoneer, the OME Nitros are kind of cushy. Not saying I don't lust after some ICONs, but bumpers first, maybe in a few years ...

The Icon stage ones are worth considering and not crazy expensive.... having had a GW as well I recall that ride....
cheers.

Thanks! I have been looking (lusting) at them ... Got two kids in college, maybe next year ...

Does anyone know what the deal is with the N74L shocks? Do you have to run OME heavy springs in the rear to utilize these shocks properly? And do they make your ride super stiff?

I just installed OME 2865s and new OEM shocks for ~1.5" lift overall - ride is fantastic.

Are the IconStage 1s user adjustable or just get revalved at the factory? I'm hoping to put a front bumper on my lx470 next spring.

Thanks!

The stage one's are longer travel then most and valved for our rigs .... you have to go to stage 3 to get the adjusters
they're not cheap but they're works of art and the ride quality and control is exactly what I expected.

Thanks again.

Best Regards,

Chuck

@sleeoffroad or anyone else...

I'm about to pull the trigger on a lift for my `99 LC but I'm concerned about all this talk about stiff rides with OME lift kit. What is the best solution if I want to run the 2.5" lift? Again, I don't plan on getting bumpers anytime soon and most of my use is 90-95% daily driver. I don't want my LC to drive like a tank, but I do want more ground clearance and slight performance upgrade when going off road.

I already have the SPC UCA on my truck. I was thinking about buying the Medium 2.5" OME lift in pieces (TB, 865 rear springs, differential drop down kit) and possibly getting more standardized shocks like Pro Comp, Rancho, Fox, etc... Does OME make a shock that isn't so hard? If I was to put on a 2.5" lift, what kind of extended/collapsed measurement in inches, should I be shooting for (i.e. extended 25.95" / collapsed 15.53")?

I asked this off Christo before but if I go with the 2.5" OME lift, will my LC ride stink bug? Which I don't want either.

FWIW, when people speak about OME's they should list spring and shock numbers. Lots of shops use ARB's application guide and use the firmer OME shocks. Those are way stiff and we never use them, even on heavy trucks.

I wish someone had told the previous owner of my 100 this! I prefer a firm ride in my cars, but it's pretty damn firm. The PO had a 1.5 lift installed but try as I might I could never get info from him or the shop that did it about what actual parts and spec were used.

Based on your needs I would re index your existing torsion bars and not go with the heavier OME ones. Once you get bumpers, winch, sliders, racks, etc, then install the OMEs.
