IMO, if you're already going to have the engine on a stand with the head, oil pans, and front cover off to make sure you address all current and near-future leaks, it's not *that* much more work to take apart the bottom end so you can clean up the pistons, install new rings, and have the machine...

My 80 is finally back on the road after being gone for a year getting body and paint work.

The rubber grommet goes into the hole, yes. Does not need to be cut because of ID. The grommets don't have holes in them yet, so you need to make the slit so the post will pass through it.
