New head unit and no sound

I am knee-deep in trying to add a Kenwood DMX8709s to my 1996 FZJ80. I tried using the Metra 70-1761 and bypass the factory amp, but I am not getting any sound.
My understanding was the truck shipped with the option to use amplified and non amplified. I thought disconnecting the amp and using the Metra would allow me to use the Kenwood to drive the speakers.
Did I miss a step? I saw an alternate harness that plugs into the disconnected amp plugs, but I thought that was only needed if I wanted to retain the 8/9 speakers. I am looking just to have the the 4 door speakers.

I had essentially the same setup and mine worked fine. Unplug/remove the factory amp and use Metra 70-1761.

I didn't plug anything into the factory amp connectors, just left them alone.

Could it be some setup config in the head unit?
