Surprise BJ42 strip down and rebuild!

Making use of some left over black paint Anyone else who has refitted door seals may know this scene all too well... Its a tricky job and one which I once again did not succeed the first time, second time or any time after that so hats off to anyone who can get a perfect finish with...

Surprise BJ42 strip down and rebuild!

A few more pics of panels/doors going on and painting a few other smaller parts Rear panels and doors all on and solid, also a box with some new lights for the rear is in prime position there ;) I gave the inside a quick respray of this grey colour because I had not originally planned to...

Surprise BJ42 strip down and rebuild!

So after some much needed downtime, time with family, plenty of beer and the wedding jitters all over I started to get back into it. Here was attempt number 2 ready to paint; after sanding down the first layer of disaster and armed with a new air compressor and spray gun. I was confident in my...

Surprise BJ42 strip down and rebuild!

Here is the floor patch after a paint and heavy handed smear of seam sealer. So with the welding work complete I set about finishing the bodywork with filler and priming ready to paint. I had considered renting a booth to spray the body, however the logistics of getting it to a booth were...

Surprise BJ42 strip down and rebuild!

Been a long time since updating the thread, but I have been hard at it and too busy to sit down and upload some pics. So lets crack on. The no return stage of cutting out a considerable section of floor! There was a small section of the body mount brace that was mostly Ok but I decided to cut...

Valve cover nut or option??? '71 Fj40

Do you have any of them currently mate? If so take one down to any decent engineering supply store and they would be able to size it up and source what you need at a fraction of the cost of a genuine part. It only needs to nip the gasket tight enough to seal the cover nothing too special

    BJ42 12V alternator/voltage regulator help required!

Yes that’s correct mate, the regulator itself looks very new so I’m pretty sure it’s the alternator at fault. I was hoping to find an alternative alternator that works just as well so I could swap them over in an hour and be on the road but I can’t seem to find much info out there of people who...

    BJ42 12V alternator/voltage regulator help required!

Hi guys, I’ve been having some dramas since finally registering and driving my car since 18 months off the road. Battery reads usually around 12.5 ish before starting and when running I’m only getting 12.15 volts with throttle around 2000 rpm and this is causing obvious problems with wiper...

How quickly after a fresh rebuild should I change the oil?

Hey mate I work as an aircraft engineer rebuilding piston engines and we generally run our engines in for 3-8 hours before dumping and filtering the oil and, as John mentioned above, cut open the oil filter and inspect the paper inside for metal contamination. Vary your rpm steadily and build...

    1984 BJ42 Parking Brake Adjustment

My 82 bj42 is drum brakes in the rear and the parking brake operates off them. You can adjust them out to hold on better using the star wheel. They’re supposed to be self adjusting but better to try and adjust it yourself to be sure of what’s happening in there. There is also an adjusting nut...

Are there any threads of restorations that were NOt frame off jobs?

This is my build thread mate. An unexpected rebuild that I have done mostly in a single car garage by myself. It’s not exactly up to restoration standard so it’s not for the faint hearted! I will be updating it soon once I get some free time. Surprise BJ42 strip down and rebuild!

    The Wall of Shame

Great thread to read guys! Makes me feel like I'm not alone on fixing my previous owners lack of intelligence! Here's a few of my best so far Just one of the many birds nests I've found, live wires everywhere! Warped flanges as a result of hardware store bolts used on a drivetrain. At...

    Clutch Help Please

Yeh mate I would assume that the air in the system is what's making it so easy to move the slave cylinder piston as there is little to no pressure in the lines. Could also help to explain poor shifting in 4th as the clutch is probably not working efficiently enough to handle the higher load of...
